WHY DID GURU GOBIND SINGH GO TO NANDED AND WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

March 15, 2013

Guru Gobind Singh travelled to Nanded accompanied by Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah in 1707-1708. For my readers to understand as to why they came to be together when the Mughal rulers were otherwise fighting against the Gurus and their followers, it’s necessary to briefly know the background leading to this event.
And before I go further, let me clarify that readers should not confuse the name of Bahadur Shah with the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Jafar. Their rule was almost 150 years apart and the later was deposed by the British in 1857 after the battle of Delhi and banished to die a lonely and ignoble death in Rangoon, Burma (Myanmar).
The popularity of Guru Arjan Dev, the 5th Guru of the Sikhs, caused much concern to the Mullahs and in particular to Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi (1569–1624), leader of the Naqashbandi School of thought which countered the liberal policies of Emperor Akbar’s reign, the 3rd ruler of the Mughal dynasty. They all prodded Emperor Jahangir, the 4th ruler, for strong action against Guru Arjan Dev. Jahangir wrote in his autobiography titled ‘Jahangirnama’, “The Hindus going to this Guru is understandable but even the stupid Muslims are going to him. I think I will ask him to either change his ways or accept Islam.”
Guru Arjan Dev was arrested in June 1606 on flimsy charges and as an alternative to being let-off, conversion to Islam was offered. But he stood his ground and was tortured in Lahore, now in Pakistan. When extreme torture did not break him, it was decided to wrap him up in a freshly skinned cowhide and throw him out in the hot June sun: The fresh hide would shrink and squeeze him into submission. Guru Arjan Dev asked for a last wish to be fulfilled, before certain death: He wanted to wash off his bloodied body so that the hide of the holy-cow would not be defiled. His tormentors found it very amusing and permitted him to enter Ravi River for a bath which runs west of the city. He went into ‘Jal Samadhi’ (Deep Meditation in Water) and never came out. Gurdwara Dehra Sahib, Lahore stands on the site of his martyrdom.

By torturing a divine personality of Guru Arjan Dev’s eminence, Jahangir had unwittingly started digging the grave of the Mughal Dynasty. His action contrasts his ancestors Babar, Humayun and Akbar who paid due respects to all the previous four Gurus: Guru Nanak the 1st, Guru Angad the 2nd, Guru Amar Das the 3rd and Guru Ram Das, the 4th.
The attitude of Shahjahan was no better but Aurangzeb’s maltreatment of non-Muslims went beyond all reasonable limits. He unleashed a reign of terror upon the Hindus by forcibly converting them by the sword besides strongly opposing to the Sikh Gurus.
Most readers may not know that the Koran justifies the use of sword if other coercive ways don’t make ‘non-believers’ accept Allah as the only God even though such ‘non-believers’ maybe very devout in their own ways and believe in one formless God. And Aurangzeb’s effort to spread Islam in India was highly appreciated by the Caliph of Islam who lived in Baghdad, Iraq.
According to the ‘History of Kashmir’ by P. N. K. Bamzai, when Aurangzeb’s atrocities became unbearable, the Brahmins of Kashmir went to the holy Amarnath cave in the higher snowbound ranges of Himalaya to pray to Lord Shiva. At night, as they slept, one of them saw Lord Shiva in his dream telling him. “No one can save Hindu religion now except Guru Teg Bahadur, the 9th Guru of the Sikhs at Anandpur Sahib in Punjab.”

Kashmiri Brahmins with Guru Tegh Bahadar with their serious problem

Kashmiri Brahmins explain their serious problem to Guru Teg Bahadur

Guru Teg Bahadur had earlier founded Anandpur Sahib and it was his place of residence. According to Bamzai a group of 500 Kashmiri Brahmins came to him on 25th May 1675 led by Kirpa Ram Dutt, a Sarasvat Brahman of Matan, near Srinagar (he later became Kirpa Singh).
According to another writing, titled ‘Bhatt Vahi Talaunda’ the number was sixteen (16): But both accounts verify the authenticity of the fact that the Kashmiri Brahmins came to Guru Sahib

After listening to their predicament, Guru Teg Bahadur was deeply concerned. Just then Gobind Rai, the 9 year old son of the Guru who later became Gobind Singh, walked into the room where he saw everyone in a pensive mood. When he asked his father the reason for their predicament, he told him everything. Normally a question by a 9 years old child on a serious matter would be dismissed with some excuse but his father seemed to know the real spiritual caliber of his son. When Gobind Rai asked, “What is the remedy for it, dear father?” his father said, “It demands sacrifice by a personality of high eminence.” Gobind Rai said, without batting an eyelid, “There is no other soul of eminence in the whole country other than you, dear father.”
It was indeed remarkable that a minor son asked his father to sacrifice himself at the altar of justice and righteousness and that too for the sake of people who worshiped statues of gods and goddesses. The Sikh philosophy, enunciated from the time of Guru Nanak, opposes the worship of statues and emphasizes the worship of one formless God Almighty by reciting ‘His Name’. It’s also very significant to note that there were -and they still exist to this day- four Shankaracharyas (akin to Cardinals of Christianity) –all Brahmins who are supposed to be guardians of Hindu religion.
The first one is located at Jyotirmath in Uttarakhand in North India -about 300 kms east of Anandpur Sahib where Guru Teg Bahadur lived. The other three are at Puri in Odisa in the East, Shringeri at Karnataka in the South and Dwarka at Gujarat the West –thus covering the whole of India. They were established in the 9th century and were supposed to be and still are the spiritual heads of Hinduism.
Unfortunately they never ever made any effort to stop forcible conversions and demolition of temples by Muslims -ever since Islam came to India. Instead, in total antipathy, they jealously guarded the areas under their own Matthas (Monasteries). They lived in a selfish manner and were not even on talking terms with each other. Had they been selfless with some foresight, they could have called upon the numerous Rajput rulers -whom they the Brahmins had elevated to the number two position in the Caste system as guardians of the society- to stand united against the onslaught of Islamic rulers.
But the selfish Rajput rulers were themselves constantly at war with each other besides vying to send their daughters to the Mughal harams. And the countryside was pillage by unscrupulous marauders who took away not only the wealth of India but thousands of men, women and children as slaves to be sold-off as far away as Europe –the Gypsies of Europe say, “We came from Bharat Maa”. And when many of the Indian slaves died crossing the snowy mountains between India and Afghanistan, the Islamic plunderers mockingly named them ‘The Hindu Kush’ meaning ‘The death trap of Hindus’.
And the most remarkable part of this history is that when Lord Shiva appeared in the dream of one of the Kashmiri Brahmins, ‘He’ did not tell them to go one of the four Shankaracharyas. Why? Because Mahadev (literally meaning ‘the highest among the gods’ as Lord Shiva is also called) knew all along that the so called custodians of Hinduism were actually a bunch of selfish and slimy individuals who were more concerned about feeding their fat bellies with goodies from the poor and upping their massive egos than doing any good for the society.
Gobind Rai was indeed right when he said to his father, “There is no other soul of eminence in the whole country other than you, dear father.”
Google ‘Shankaracharyas’ for more details.
After hearing the fearless verdict from his minor son, Guru Sahib asked the Brahmins to send a word to Aurangzeb that ‘if Guru Teg Bahadur accepts Islam they shall willingly convert’. Thereupon, Kirpa Ram Dutt and his companions sent a petition to Emperor Aurungzeb through the Governor of Lahore. The Brahmins of Hardwar and Banaras –two other major centers of pilgrimage in north India- also conveyed the same message when they heard about the Guru’s decision. They were all very sure that Guru Teg Bahadur would stand his ground like Guru Arjan Dev had done in the past. Why didn’t the Brahmins of Hardwar and Banaras go to one of the nearest Shankaracharyas?
The Sikh Gurus, by personal example, had shown to their Sikhs ‘how one has to offer martyrdom at the altar of justice’ -fearlessly.
Guru Teg Bahadur installed Gobind Rai, his 9 year old son, as the 10th Guru and prepared to leave for Delhi to face his remarkable destiny. He had literally challenged the Mughal Emperor and a challenge or a dare to his authority was like asking for death. As soon he came out of the jurisdiction of Anandpur Sahib, he was arrested, shackled with heavy chains like an ordinary criminal, put into a cage and carried on top of an elephant all the way to Delhi as the Muslim masses on the way hackled and taunted him for daring the Emperor. In shackles he was marched in front of Aurangzeb in the Diwan-e-Aam (the general court) inside the Red Fort and the Emperor gave him a choice: ‘accept Islam or be executed’. Guru Teg Bahadur preferred martyrdom to conversion. By living up to the expectations of the Brahmins, of which they were very sure, he saved Hindu religion from permanent extinction forever.
Unfortunately the present day Hindus shamelessly prefer to overlook this fact. Book Publishers of Hindu background are so ungrateful that they prefer to print books about several gods and goddesses and never mention Guru Teg Bahadur’s martyrdom and sacrifice. They don’t print books about him because it would remind them of this shame.
With the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur the grave of the Mughal Dynasty –which Jahangir had started digging- was complete. Now it was a matter of time before the final demise of their rule. Since the Gurus had shown to their Sikhs ‘how they had to feed the insatiable appetite of the cruel demon of religious persecution’, the Sikhs made innumerable sacrifices for the overall good of the country in the face of systematic persecution that followed by the Mughal tyrants.
Guru Teg Bahadur was beheaded in full public view on 11th November 1675 at the Kotwali (police station and prison) where Gurdwara Sheesh Gunj now stands in Chandni Chowk bazaar, Delhi. The martyrdom of his father motivated Guru Gobind Rai, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, to prepare for a big event. Since he was only 9 years old he marked time to prepare himself for the future. When he came of age, he created the ‘Khalsa Panth’, the Brotherhood of the Pure in March 1699 to defend the meek and hapless. That is the time when from Guru Gobind Rai he became Guru Gobind Singh by suffixing the ‘Singh’ (Lion) to his name, like he had made his followers do.
The creation of ‘Khalsa Panth’ brought the Guru in direct confrontation with the Mughals who were unfortunately helped by the 22 Hindu hill Rajas of present day Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The Guru’s force being small and inexperienced was pitted against larger numbers but the Sikhs gave no-quarters and asked for no-concessions: Each Sikh killing many before falling in battle. The Mughal Commanders in the field along with their hill associates swore upon the Koran and the holy-cow, respectively, promising Guru Gobind Singh a safe-passage if he left the fort and went away elsewhere. Guru Sahib knew that the promise was false but his inexperienced fighters urged him to agree: Shortage of urgent supplies forced the situation. (Blockade of forts was the most effective tactic in those days to force terms and conditions upon opponents -like imposing sanctions upon defaulting countries now.) When Guru Gobind Singh came out of the fort on a cold and rainy December 1705 night, the immoral and deceitful enemy attached him, backing off from their solemn promise.
This was the ultimate sin which further accelerated the downslide of the Mughals.
Guru Gobind Singh lost two of his four sons in the battle. The other two along with their grandmother were entrusted for safe passage to his cook Gangu Ram, a Kashmiri Brahmin of Kaul Gotra. But, instead of following the age old Hindu norm, ‘A guest is to be treated like God’ he turned them over to the Governor of Sarhind for a prize. They were bricked up alive for refusing to accept Islam and their grandmother died of shock seeing the cruelty meted out to children who were just 7 and 9 years old.
It maybe coincidental but Indira Gandhi was also of Kaul Gorta and some people believe that she was, perhaps, Gangu’s descendant. The fact is that Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi’s father, mentions in his autobiography that Raj Kaul, Gangu’s son was allotted a Jagir (perpetual land-lease) by Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiar near a canal west of Delhi about the year 1716. The family name ‘Nehru’, according to him, originated because of the residence being next to a canal meaning a Nehar in Persian.
We are now seeing the Taliban perpetuate the same cruelty upon innocent people. Is that the writing on the wall? Is history going to repeat? It would be worthwhile waiting for the demise of ‘a cruel culture’.
Once the news about the martyrdom of his sons reached Guru Gobind Singh, he wrote a severe indictment called ‘Jafarnama’ (moral victory) to Aurangzeb -a masterpiece in Persian language- exposing his double standards and immoral rule. When Aurangzeb read it, he regretted but it was too late. The Emperor fell ill shortly thereafter and died on 20 February 1707.
When Bahadur Shah became the Emperor after Aurangzeb, his actual name was Qutb ud-Din Muhammad Mu’azzam and he was the Governor of Kabul. His younger step-brother, Azam Shah –the other son of Aurangzeb- was the Governor of the southeastern part of the empire as shown in the map below. Azam Shah declared himself the next Emperor and ascended a make-believe throne at Ahmadnagar though the capital was Delhi. The map also indicates the general geographical location of the Sikhs, Rajputs and Marathas who carved their respective Empires after the Mughals -for a short period though- before the English took over the whole of India.

Extent of Mughal Empire copy

Extent of Mughal Empire when Bahadur Shah asked for military help from Guru Gobind Singh. Then the downfall came

Fighting for the throne and killing your kith-and-kin was the ultimate sin which caused the downfall of the Mughal dynasty. Discredit for this trend falls squarely upon the shoulders of Aurangzeb who got rid of his elder brother Dara Shikho though their father Shahjahan had nominated him as the successor. Aurangzeb literally walked over the blood of all his brothers to ascend the throne besides pre-maturely imprisoning his father for the rest of his life in Agra fort. Then to appease the diehard Sunni Mullahs –who didn’t approve of his deeds and perhaps to condone for his sins- Aurangzeb began to rule by the Sharia (Islamic Law) which caused the abovementioned events to take place.
Once the war of succession became imminent, Muazam sent a request to Guru Gobind Singh for military help. Guru Sahib was by then camping at Sirsa and the request for military help was unusual. A change of attitude was, perhaps, necessitated after the Mughal Commanders observed the fighting tenacity of the Guru’s followers. Though Muazam was not directly involved in such campaigns -being far away in Kabul- but reports reaching him may have shown the writing on the wall: The possibility of a Sikh military force emerging in north India.
Guru Gobind Singh agreed to give military support on two conditions: Firstly when Muazam becomes the Emperor he would treat all his non-Muslim subjects as equals and Secondly he would hand over to the Guru all those who committed atrocities upon his Sikhs. Though it may seem that the defaulters were to be ‘punished’, on the contrary, no Guru had ‘ever-punished-anyone’. In fact, during the short history of Sikhism, their sermons had made human beings out of demons.
After Muazam agreed to the two conditions, a Jatha (Group or Troop) of Sikhs blessed by Guru Gobind Singh was sent. He did not take part in the battle since he wanted his followers to stand alone and develop their military skills for the future. Moreover, he had pronounced, when he created the ‘Khalsa Panth’ in 1699, that he as their Guru, would always be present among his Sikhs whenever they would remember him. Therefore Guru Gobind Singh was with them all the time in the battle.
The crucial battle was fought at a place called Jajuwan -north of Agra- on 19 June 1707 and Muazam was victorious. To permanently remove any challengers to the throne, Muazam executed his younger step-brother Azam Shah and his two sons. He thereby added some more misdeeds to the cauldron of sins setup by his father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
After Muazam became the Emperor, Guru Gobind Singh went from Sirsa and to Moti Bagh in Delhi where a Gurdwara stands on the Ring Road now. Then, on invitation from Bahadur Shah, he went to Agra. The Mughal Emperor received him very courteously in the Durbar getting up from his throne to do so and offered a seat which was never done: Others had to remain standing. Then he presented Guru Gobind Singh with a Khilat -a trail of expensive gifts. The Khilat also included a Saif (equivalent of the Indian Khanda or the European Broad Sword) shown below which once belonged to Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of Prophet Mohammad. The Saif was sent to Aurangzeb by the Caliph of Baghdad in appreciation of his efforts to spread Islam in India. It’s now preserved among the weapons of Guru Gobind Singh at Keshgarh Sahib Gurdwara in Punjab, India.

After presentation of the Khilat, Guru Gobind Singh reminded the Emperor of the two conditions he had agreed upon but Bahadur Shah remained noncommittal. Maybe, he didn’t want to antagonize many anti-Sikh elements his Court. However, instead of chastising the Emperor, Guru Sahib decided to persuade him. The Emperor requested Guru Sahib to accompany him towards the Deccan, the southern peninsula of India, where the Mughals were fighting the Marathas in the present day hinterland of Bombay. During their ride together Guru Gobind Singh reminded him about his promises on several occasions but Bahadur Shah evaded the subject.
Some anti-Sikh elements in the army tried to provoke a fight with the trusting Sikhs and a prominent Sikh named Maan Singh was killed by them. Despite the provocation, the two reached Nanded where Guru Sahib tried for the last time to persuade the Emperor. When he found him backtracking on his word, Guru Gobind Singh told the Emperor on his face that he would rule for a very short period.
By not keeping his word, the Emperor dumped some more sins into his account which started the process of putting the Mughal Dynasty into its grave.
The words of Guru Gobind Singh came true and Bahadur Shah ruled from 1707 to 1712 –for 5 years only- and was mercilessly killed in Lahore by his own sons at the age of 70. The rulers after Bahadur Shah –in particular Farrukhsiar- laid a prize on the head of a Sikh: Anyone bringing the chopped head of a Sikh got 10 Rupees as shown in art impression below. All such historic orders were recorded in the Court Diary of the Mughals called ‘Darbarey Akhbaar Maula’.

The Mughal Dynasty’s cauldron of misdeeds continued to simmer with many more sins committed by those who followed. Unheard of things happened to succeeding rulers until the last one in 1857.

Guru Gobind Singh probably knew all along that Emperor Bahadur Shah would not keep his word. His willingness to let his Sikhs fight for the Mughals was meant to train them for bigger military confrontations which subsequently enabled them to play bigger roles in the history of north India.

It may sound coincidental but the fighter to continue the struggle against the Mughals was found by Guru Gobind Singh in Nanded itself a short distance away from the spot where he had his last meeting with Bahadur Shah. The name of the fighter was Madho Dass, a Bairagi Sadhu, meaning ‘the one who had renounced the worldly life of a householder’. He was given the Pahul in September 1708: baptized with Amrit prepared with the Khanda in the same way as Guru Sahib had done for the first time in March 1699. Thus he became a Sikh of Guru Gobind Singh and was named Gurbaksh Singh, meaning ‘blessed by the Guru’.

However he came to be known as Banda Bahadur or Banda Singh Bahadur. This happened when he met Guru Gobind Singh for the first time sitting on his Asan or his seat in a comfortable pose. He asked in a challenging voice, “Who are you?” Guru Sahib asked, “Don’t you know who I am?” Madho Das realized who he was and said, “Oh, so you are Guru Gobind Singh.” Then, with due humility, he lowered his head to the ground and said, “Guru Maharaj, I am your Banda,” meaning ‘Male Slave’. Thus he was known as ‘Banda of the Guru’ and when he crushed Mughal rule in Punjab, his followers called him Banda Bahadur or Banda Singh Bahadur. The Great Banda Bahadur

An artist’s impression of Banda Singh Bahadur

By finding Madho Das at Nanded and by channelizing the supernatural powers of a Bairagi Sadhu, Guru Gobind Singh set an example for us: ‘For performing insurmountable deeds you have to develop your spiritual self through prayer and devotion to God Almighty’.
Gurbaksh Singh alias Banda Bahadur alias Banda Singh Bahadur shook the foundation of Mughal Empire in North India during the next seven years -1709 to 1715- and paved the way for complete liberation of Punjab from 1764 onwards. His pioneering struggle helped establish the Sikh Empire which put a stop to the six monthly raids from Afghanistan and forcible conversion of people. It was achieved at great personal sacrifices by innumerable Sikhs of Guru Gobind Singh.
Yet when the Sikhs came to power under Maharaja Ranjit Singh and other princely rulers south of Sutlej River, they did not go about putting Muslims to the sword in the same way as it had been done to them.

Had it not been for the events that took place –sacrifices of the Gurus and their selfless Sikhs- there would not have been Pakistan, today.
There would have been just one country called ‘The Islamic Republic of Hindustan’ with Hinduism banished to the corridors of museums.
Women wearing Burqa would have gawking in wonder at the Hindu artifacts and beautifully carved statues of gods and goddesses. A socialite among them may have commented placing her manicured palm upon her heaving bosom, “Hai Allah! (Oh my god!) We should have let some of them stay-on.” Her neighbor would have glared at her, “Why Jeenat?” Her reply, “They would have made those beautiful figurines for my drawing room, No? What an impression it would have made at my next kitti-party.”
I have heard from Indian and Pakistani Muslims, “Had you Sikhs not put a stop to what Aurangzeb was doing, the whole of India would have been Muslims.”

      Dear Hari Shankar,
Thank you for your valuable comments.
As I had mentioned in one of the email chains of this veterangroup, a Saint had made some predictions -not with the intent to make predictions- but it was like an Updesh, way back in the 1960s. I think his name was Sant Jawala Singh. He was visiting some of my relatives in Chandigarh when my wife and I just happened to walk in and heard him. He was emphasizing on Naam Simran (Reciting God’s Name as the basis of Sikh Dharma) to go through very bad times coming in India as well in the world.
He had predicted about what happened in the Golden Temple complex in 1984. And he had said the Muslims shall rise and go to the extreme with much bombing. Then there will be a big change in them or they will be finished which mean in the modern context a change in their Koranic belief. The moderates among them are already challenging the orthodox.
And the Santji also said that not many Keshdhari Sikhs will be left (We can see that already happening partially due to suppression by the Government and partially due to employment needs –many Sikhs have shaved and many have given up wearing a turban.) This I call ‘a strengthening of our resolve’ which has happened to us many times in our short history due to suppression at the hands of the Mughals and as well as Afghan raiders. It’s a good thing in a way.
But the silver lining is that there will be a Wave and Great Keenness to become an Amrit Dhari Sikh.
Guru Gobind Singh is believed to have said -as heard from the wise- that when the Hindus will change their attitude then there will be greatness among them or words to that effect. Are the common Hindus not worshiping a god for a particular gain or favor and another god or goddess for another favor? This is a selfish attitude and the opposite of what is happening at Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) where singing the praise of God Almighty starts at about 3 am and continues up to almost 10 pm. Where else in the world is such a devotion to God taking place?
Really there is a great need for a big change in almost all the major religious beliefs of the world to make them homogenous and compatible to each other for peace to prevail.
What, we as a world are going through is the Sagar Mathan –the Soceity being akin to a Maha Sagar. Like the epic churning of the ocean by Devas and Rakashas produced Amrit as well as Vish (poison) so the present churning is bringing forth good ideas as well as causing traumatic situations in the world where many are being killed.
We are on the threshold of a new beginning and I wonder how many of us will live to see the Khalsa Raj –rule by the pure or Ram Rajya or Kingdom of God- whatever one may call it. Perhaps, then the famous saying of Guru Gobind Singh will come true “Raj Karey Ga Khalsa, Akee Rahey Na Koye” meaning “The Pure Shall Rule and there shall not be a need for anyone to rebel”. Akee is a person who is fed up and takes to arms and rebels –something like the Maoist who are expressing their discontent due to lack of development and other factors like corruption etc.
Therefore just wait. If you are a praying type, start your prayers to God Almighty during the Brahma Murut time which in Gurbani is called Amritvela –the time when Amrit is flowing- and the desirous has to open your mind and take it. For that one has to rise very early and finish the prayers before sunrise.

        Dear Gurpinder Singh Khalsa,
Thank you for the comment. I wish you could have written more in detail about your thoughts. Try and do it next time so that my readers would understand your comments better.
You will agree that the Internet is a wonderful thing: In particular because if one had to discuss some sensitive subject with someone who was very touchy it would have been almost impossible and may have led to some aggressive reaction. This applies in particular to some people who have commented on other articles posted here. From their comments I felt that they belonged to the Pathan homeland which is now in Pakistan: Face to face it would have been near impossible to talk sense to them.
By the way I was a Prisoner of War in Pakistan as a result of the 1971 war which created Bangladesh. One of the Doctors –a Pathan- who used to visit me regularly in the hospital ward –since I was injured and bedridden- threatened me with dire consequences when our friendly and informative chat went off at a tangent. I decided to hold my critical opinions thereafter because I was at his ‘medical-mercy’.
Therefore I would suggest you write in future more clearly and fearlessly.
        With warm regards,

We always read that Muslim or Hindu are against Sikhs and saw many paintings Sikhs being killed by Muslims. But i never heard about, what East India Company done to Sikhs ? Can you write about East India Company and SIKHS.

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      Mr. Adam,
Thank you for your interest in the subject.
Firstly it is a wrong and common notion among Hindus that the Sikhs were militarized to the Khalsa Panth order -“The Brotherhood of the Pure”- to fight against Muslims. This probably happened because Muslim rulers of the time were impressed upon by their Mullahs to take exemplary action against anyone rising in revolt due to forced conversion. But some Muslim rulers, who knew that Guru Gobind Singh was right and they believed in him, were the blessed ones like the Nawab of Malerkotla. The Muslims of this small town still reside in India’s Punjab while almost all others went away to Pakistan.
When the Khalsa was created by Guru Gobind Singh even some of his Muslim followers took the Amrit Paan -the baptismal ceremony- and were blessed by him. The second batch of those who joined Khalsa Panth had names like Azam, Adam, Ali, Shamsher, Iqbal etc. And from then onwards they became ‘Singhs’. Even the Gurdwara reform movement of 1922-25 got initiated because a Muslim of Lahore converted to Sikhism which is long story by itself.
The Sikhs being maltreated by the Muslims as one sees in the paintings gives that impression that the Muslims were the only one persecute the Sikhs. On the other hand there were many Hindu rulers who fought against the Sikhs like the Rajas of present day Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Besides, there were some Hindu Generals of the Governor of Lahore who took part in battles against the Sikhs.
When the order given out on the morning of 9th December 1705 that Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, aged 9 and 7 respectively sons of Guru Gobind Singh, were to be bricked up alive and the Nawab of Malerkotla protested that the tenants of Islam did not permit it, it was Suchha Nand, a Brahmin advisor to Wazir Khan, the Governor of Sirhind, who urged him that sons of a snake should not be spared.
On the other hand it was a rich merchant, Seth Todar Mal of Sirhind a Jainy by faith, who obtained permission to perform the last rites offering to cover the ground where the bodies lay outside the fort wall with gold coins. The merchant respectfully cremated the bodies of the Guru’s mother and sons. When faced with persecution he left the town and was never heard of.
By East India Company I suppose you mean the English in general. Well, various English travelers who visited Delhi during the Mughal rule had witnessed the Sikh’s tenacity during persecution by beheading. They reported all that they saw in writing and that is how we what all happened besides information from the Mughal court diary called ‘Akhbare-Darbar-Maula’. And various English travelers were also witness to actual historical events which led to the downfall of Mughal rule in north India and the rise of the Sikh Confederacies -the Misals- the English becoming aware that the Sikhs were a tough nut to crack.
And when Maharaja Ranjit Singh made his position strong in Punjab and was looking at the lands south of River Sutlej, the English offered him a Treaty in 1809 just to restrict him north of the river. The Treaty also came about because the Phulkian dynasty of Patiala, Nabha, Jind and Faridkot States approached the English for support against their own cousin Ranjit Singh whose mother was the Princess of Nabha. That was the politics of the times.
The assessment of the English was they would need lot of planning to topple Ranjit Singh unlike other Indian rulers who had succumbed to their vile diplomatic moves one after the other. So they began the process of cultivating the inner circle after Maharaja Ranjit Singh died. Their plan began to take shape when the sons of Ranjit Singh were killed by their own kin, the Sandhanwalia Sardars. By the time the king-killing ended Gulab Singh, the Dogra Prime Minster of the Sikh court at Lahore -ancestor of Dr. Karan Singh the last ruler of Kashmir- was firmly ensconced in the seat of power. Besides the treacherous Gulab Singh, there were two brothers Tej Singh and Lal Singh of Gaur Brahmin background originally from village Eekri in Sardhana tehsil of Merrut district of present day Uttar Pradesh. They had followed their uncle Kushal Singh to the Sikh Durbar and easily got jobs converting to Sikhism.
By the time Dalip Singh, the minor son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, sat on the throne the English had the Dogra Gulab Singh and the Gaur Brahmins Tej Singh and Lal Singh in their pocket. When the Battle of Ferozeshah was fought on 21st and 22nd December, 1845 the English had run out of ammunition and their Governor-General, Sir Henry Hardinge, began to burn all top secret documents expecting an imminent surrender. But Tej Singh, who had 30,000 troops at his command as fresh reserves, did not attack the English despite his Sikh and Muslim commanders urging him to do so. Instead he withdrew across River Sutlej letting the English convert a sure defeat into victory.
According Captain Amarinder Singh, ‘the present day notional Maharaja of Patiala’ Tej Singh was in touch with the English and had assured that he would not let them down. This is mentioned in his well researched book titled ‘The Last Sunset: The rise and fall of the Lahore Durbar.’ According this book a similar trend was noticed in subsequent battles. By the time the First Anglo-Sikh ended, Gulab Singh, the Prime Minister of the Sikhs, received from the British all the lands in Kashmir that were ceded to them by the Treaty of Lahore for a sum of 7,500,000 rupees.
The battle of Chillianwala was fought on 13th January, 1849 in which three British Regiments lost their colours –a great shame for a regiment- besides one of the Infantry battalions, the 24th Foot, suffering almost 50% killed. The battle was actually a victory for the Sikhs but for the heavy rain which separated the two armies and in the utter confusion and bad ground the Sikhs did not pursue their victory who withdrew to Chillianwala in a demoralized condition.
The kind of mauling that the British had to bear at the hands of the Sikhs: They had never ever experienced anywhere else in India. Two of their Regiments had to be raised afresh since they were finished to the last man. Several Generals lie buried in all the battlefields of the two Anglo-Sikh wars which ended with the annexation of Punjab to the disappointment of all the Punjabis irrespective of their faith. The English had never, until then, lost that many General Officers in a single war’s fighting. And they never lost that many General Officers in a single war’s fighting even after that up to this time.
One can say that the British had failed to dislodge the Sikhs in fair battle notwithstanding the use of subterfuge and buying-out someone like Nawab Mir Jafar in the Battle of Plassey or Jang e Palasi on 23 June 1757. Sikhs were the only adversary in India, Afghanistan, Nepal and Iran which checked-mated a British Army with more than three British Infantry Regiments and above 10,000 men in open country, without the safety of any fortress walls like Seringapatnam, Bharatpur or Delhi or any mountain fastness like Nepal and Afghanistan or the Trans Indus Frontier regions. It is an indeed a unique honour never broken by any British adversary from 1757 to 1947 that goes to the valiant Sikhs.
According to Shah Muhammad, the famous point of Punjab, the Singhs had squeezed the blood of the Goras as one would squeeze a lemon.
One of the significant outcomes of these wars was the enrolment of Punjabi men as soldiers into the British Indian Army and in particular the Sikhs. And when the Bengal Army revolted in 1857, the English found an alternate source of soldiers more reliable and more tenacious and disbanded most of the Battalion from Eastern India. By the time the First World War ended almost 50% of the British Indian Army was Punjabis of which half were Sikhs. When the Second World War ended 55% were Punjabis of which half were Sikhs.
Had the British left India in one piece the Punjabis would have been dominating in the Armed Forces which the non-Punjabis must have feared. My belief is that the creation of Pakistan was a mere excuse to divide Punjab with eastern Bengal and other provinces falling in naturally. This sinister design is evident from further division of Punjab in India into three parts and the Punjabi Hindus declaring Hindi as their mother tongue just because they were Hindus. Whereas all other Hindus –of Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat, the four south Indian states and Orrisa- have always and still declare their actual languages they speak as their mother tongue.

      • Sandeep Says:

You gave reference of Maharaja Patiala. ! Well which side his ancestors were during Anglo Sikh war? But you wouldn’t mention just because they were 5th or 6th gen converts. Also you didn’t mention that Guru Gobind Singh presented 5000 gold coins to king Bahadur Shah and Guru Gobind Singh went to south with badshah as his mansabdar( Military General) to crush Hindu Maratha Kingdom.

      • tejwantsingh Says:

        Mr Sandeep,
        Thank you for your comment.
Your historical information is absolutely wrong about why Guru Gobind Singh accompanied Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah to the Deccan. What I have written is authenticated by historical records.
If Guru Gobind Singh went as the Emperor’s Mansabdar then the Emperor could not have presented him an expensive Khilat along with the rare Saif of Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of Prophet Mohammad which the Calipha of Baghdad had sent to Aurangzeb in appreciation of his efforts to spread Islam in India. Mughal military commanders were not treated with such a curtsy.
And I have heard from Maharashtrians, whose ancestors fought in the Third Battle of Panipat in 1762, that Guru Gobind Singh met the Peshwa. Why would he have met the Peshwa if he was conniving with the Mughals?
I find the Hindus nowadays are very fond of belittling the achievements of the Sikhs. The whole 1984 episodes starting with the common Haryanvi policemen misbehaving with Sikhs who were traveling on the GT Road from Punjab to Delhi was an attempt to see how the Sikhs would react. And when they react they are called terrorist and extremist and all kinds of names.
And they made up stories of all kinds during the attack on Golden Temple when the media was under the thumb of the Government and Doordarshan was a Sarkari TV. What is truth?
And why no bastard has hanged any bastard for what they did to the Sikhs after Indira was killed? And they call is Anti-Sikh riots whereas it was out-right genocide. The definition of riot is that two groups of people fight as equals. In this case it was one sided killings.
Where are the original historical papers which the Army took away from the Library of the Golden Temple? The whole effort was to finish the Sikhs and their valiant history.
You may consider Shivaji a hero but outside Marathwada he was hated by others whose property his men looted and whose women were raped by his so called valiant men. Outside the city of Ahmadabad in Gujarat both Hindu and Muslim men had killed their women lest they fall into the hands of marauding Marathas.
The Sikhs never did anything like this. All those Maratha women who were captured by Ahmed Shah Abdali after crushing the over proud Maratha men in the Third Battle of Panipat were saved by the Sikhs when the invader was passing through Punjab. On the contrary wherever the Maratha army went everything was on the house including other people’s women. And the Peshwa’s body was never found. He actually ran away from the battlefield.
Why did Lord Shiva ask the Kashmiri Pundits to go to Guru Teg Bahadur and he did not send them to one of the four Shakracharayas? Please give me and answer to that.
Why is the mountain range between Afghanistan and now Pakistan named Hindu-Kush meaning the ‘threat-trap of Hindus’?
Who stopped Muslim invasions from the northwest?
Who contributed 71% of all those freedom fighters who were hanged, sent to Kala Pani and shot? The Sikhs did it whereas our population is only 2%. Where were all the rest of the countrymen when we were sacrificing ourselves for the sake of the country?
And the Pulkian Dynasty siding with the British was a political game of the time as any political game even now.
The two Generals who were secretly siding with the English during the Anglo-Sikhs were actually Gaur Brahmins from village Eekri in Saldhana tehsil of Merrut district of western UP. They had opted for Sikhism only for employment.
Can you give me any proud fact of the Brahmins other than exploiting the society through the Caste System? Volumes can be written about the biggest criminals of Indian history –a minority who suppressed the majority.
You come back with a reply to my questions and I will give you more cannon fodder to digest.

        SSA Tejwant sing ji,
The way you replied is awesome. No doubt that Guru Gobind singh ji’s sikhs are the greatest of all. No Maratha, rajput or any other hindu rular had guts to fight against cruelty of Muslim regime. Sikhs has lived to the saying of Guru ” “Soora so pechanniye jo lare deen ke hait, purja purja kat mare kabho na chaade keht”.
Unfortunately, In India Sikhs haven’t got what they deserve. But we should remember that guru ji has said coming of khalsa is imminent. May waheguru Bless all.
        Vikram.

      • tejwantsingh Says:

        Dear Vikram,

Sat Siri Akal, and thank you for the comments. I have been trying to analyse in my own ways ‘Why Sikh soldiers do better than others despite equal opportunities given to everyone?’ This analysis was triggered after a harmless comment by one of my brother-in-law -a retired Sikh Brigadier who had commanded an Artillery Regiment.

Ironically this brother-in-law of mine maintains Kesh and wears a turban but does not go to Gurdwara or recite Gurbani since he had been indoctrinated with some negative ideas by some Communist elements during his school days. No problem. It’s his choice. But he maintains due respect for the Gurus because of the transformation they brought about in the society which had been badly handled by the Brahmins.
He once said, “Shivaji must have been a greater leader of men compared to Guru Gobind Singh.”

I was obviously very surprised but knowing his attitude towards religion and spiritual activity I held back my response and asked, “How do you say that?”

He replied, “The Artillery Regiment which I commanded was manned purely by Maratha soldiers but I found them to be the laziest people one could ever get an opportunity to command in the Indian Army. Therefore Shivaji must have been really a greater leader to motivate such lazy people to go out and fight for their rights. Compared to them the Punjabi farmers -all Jatts and Rajputs including the so called lower castes- just needed proper leadership because they were anyway a go-getting-tough people. I am not counting the selfish Punjabi traders in that category who started adopting ‘Sikhism in appearance’ after complete control was established in Punjab by the Sikhs: The basic and the most difficult fighting was done by farmer communities of Punjab and not the traders.”

I was obviously surprised by his analysis. He continued to say, “Once there was a difficult task to be done and I gave orders to my Subedar Major who was the senior most JCO in the Regiment. I told him that I was going for some meeting and by the time I come back this should be done –you have two hours at your disposal.”

When I nodded with keen interest he continued, “I came back after three hours and was very surprised to find that nothing had been done: The task was in the same stage when I left. They were still sitting around, discussing and scratching their heads. On the other hand had they been Sikh soldiers they would have said, “’Saabji, no problem’. They would have shouted the Jaykara ‘Boley-so-Nihal-Sat-Siri-Akal’ and started immediately. And they would have finished much before the end of the stipulated time.”

I was not surprised because in the Air Force I had the same experience and noted that other than Punjabis all others had to be nudged into action.

And that reminds me of Guru Gobind Singh’s famous saying when he took Amrit from the hands of his Punj Pyaras whom he had given the same with his own hands. He said to them, “Wherever there will be FIVE of the KHALSA I shall be there amongst them.”

Therefore the Great Guru is there with his Sikhs all the time even now. And adversity will make the Sikhs even stronger because in the times to come -which are going to get even more difficult- it will be ‘purity in spiritualism’ that will survive like the Khalsa survived despite Mughal and Afghan persecution while the rest of the society sat back and watched with that ‘let us see who wins?’ attitude.

WaheGuru Ji ka khalsa , Waheguru Ji ki Fateh ..
    I have 2 questions ….
    1. Can you please write in detail about the last days of Guru Gobind Singh ji’s life at Nanded and about His message He gave in His last get together with Sikhs there ?
    2. As in today’s world we can see no one likes to keep hair , everyone is shaving , nothing is happening in accordance as Guru Ji said ‘Raj karega Khalsa’ ; then when will this saying of Guru Ji will came into being ?

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      Dear Satwant Singhji,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ke Fateh
I am very sorry for replying after almost two months.
For finding out the exact events that took place before Guru Gobind Singh ji passed the ‘Guru Gaddhi’ to Guru Granth Sahib and left this world, I had to look for authentic information which has been researched by well-known people. There is a book titled ‘THE HERITAGE OF THE SIKHS’ by Professor Harbans Singh published in 1985 by Manohar Publications, 1 Ansari Road, Darya Ganj, New Delhi-110002.
There are 15 other written works about the Sikhs by Professor Harbans Singh, who expired a few years back. The list is: Guru Nanak and Origins of the Sikh Faith; Guru Teg Bahadur; Guru Gobind Singh; Maharaja Ranjit Singh; Bhai Vir Singh; Aspects of Punjabi Literature; Higher Education in America; Bhai Vir Singh: Poet of the Sikhs; An Introduction to Indian Religions; Perspectives on Guru Nanak; Approaches to the Study of Religion; Punjab Past and Present; Berkeley Lectures on Sikhism; Mahindi and Le Sikhisme. His books have been translated into several Indian languages.
You may be able to find some of these books in libraries in Punjab and Delhi. I didn’t see any in American libraries during an online search. The only book about Punjab and Sikhs in some American libraries was a coffee-table version by late Khushwant Singh which cannot be accessed by common people who would like to pick-up one at a local book shop out of curiosity. That was one of the reasons for writing my first book, ‘The Bold Brave and Fearless’ where the main character is a Sikh soldier. This book is available on http://www.amazon.com. My next book about bravery of Sikh warriors is titled ‘Someone Will Come’. I am waiting to find an Agent in America. And the absence of enough reading material about the Sikhs in American libraries was also one of the reasons for starting this blog.
I found awareness about the Sikhs among common Americans was shockingly very-very poor. When I went to fly with the US Air Force in 1964 almost everyone at the Air Force Base, beyond our Squadron, thought I was from Turkey or Saudi Arabia or was related to Ali Baba, a character from the ‘Arabian Nights’ stories. And out on the street most common people didn’t know anything beyond their own County.
Coming to the first question by Satwant Singh about ‘the last days of Guru Gobind Singh at Nanded and His message to the Sikhs’: After Guru Gobind Singh baptized Madho Das on September 3, 1708 with Amrit and sent him off to Punjab to carry on the struggle against tyranny, he was happily settled on the bank of Godavari River like he had been near the Ganga in Patna Sahib and near the Sutlej at Anandpur Sahib. But Nawab Wazir Khan, the Governor of Sirhind, was concerned at the Mughal Emperor’s conciliatory treatment of Guru Sahib. Fearing for his own position he had sent two of his trusted Pathans named Jamshed Khan and Wasil Beg to harm the Guru. They followed Guru Sahib to Nanded and began to familiarize themselves with the Sikh camp.
One evening, as Guru Gobind Singh lay resting in his chamber after the Rehiras prayers, one of these Pathans suddenly stabbed him with his dagger on the left side of the abdomen. By the time he could attack again, Guru Sahib struck him down with his own sabre. The other Pathan was finished by the Sikhs when they rushed on hearing the commotion. When the news reached the Mughal Emperor’s nearby camp he sent expert surgeons including an Englishman. The wound was healed but on a later occasion it opened up and started bleeding badly when Guru Sahib stretched a powerful bow. The wound would not heal.
Therefore on October 6, 1708 Guru Gobind Singh called all the Sikhs and reminded then how Akal’s Will had to be cheerfully accepted under all conditions and at all times. Then he asked for the Sacred Volume of Granth Sahib to be brought forth to his presence. What transpired then is from the writings of Bhatt Vahi Talauda Parganah Jind. He full name was Narbud Singh Bhatt son of Kesho Singh Bhatt. Narbud Singh Bhatt was with Guru Gobind Singh at Nander at that time.
It goes: Guru Gobind Singhji, mahila dasman, beta Guru Tegh Bahadurji ka, pota Guru Hargobindji ka, parpota Guru Arjunji ka, bans Guru Ram Dasji ki, Surajbansi Gosal gotra, Sodhi Khatri, basi Anandpur, parganah Kahlur, muqam Nander tat Godavari, des dakkan, sammat satran sai painsath Kartik mas ki chauth, sukla pakkhe, budhvar ke dihun, Bhai Daya Singh se bachan hoya, Sri Granth Sahib lai ao, bachan pai Daya Singh Sri Granth Sahib lai aye. Guruji ne panch paise narial age bheta rakha, matha teka, sarbatt Sangat se kaha mera hukam hai meri jagah Sri Granthji ko janana, jo Sikh janega tis ke ghal thaen paegi Guru tis ke bahuri karega, satt kar manana.
Translated it reads: Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Master, son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, grandson of Guru Hargobind, great-grandson of Guru Arjun, of the family of Guru Ram Das, Surajbansi, Gosal gotra, Sodhi Khatri, resident of Anandpur, parganah Kahlur, now at Nander, in the Godavari country in the Deccan, asked Bhai Daya Singh, on Wednesday, October 6, 1708, to fetch Sri Granth Sahib. In obedience to his orders, Bhai Daya Singh brought Sri Granth Sahib. The Guru placed before it five paisa and a narial and bowed his head before it. He said to the Sangat, “It is my commandment: Own Sri Granth Sahib in my place. He who so acknowledges it will obtain his reward. The Guru will rescue him. Know this as the truth.”
Another authority that may relevantly be quoted is Devaraja Sharma’s Nanakacandrodayamahakavyam, an old Sanskrit manuscript which has been published by Sanskrit University, Varanasi. It proclaims that Sri Granth Sahib would be the Guru after him.
The original in Sanskrit reads as follows:
Nandalalas tadaprechat ko asmakam adhuna guruh,
kam namena ca pasyema kasmai varta vadema,
ca use gurustu yusmakam grantha eva gurumatah,
tam nameta ca pasyeta tasmai varta vadeta ca.
Translated it says: While the Master lay on his deathbed, Nand Lal came forward and asked the following questions: “Who shall be our teacher now? Who shall we salute and see and what shall be the object of our discourse?” The Master replied, “The Granth, which itself is the doctrine of the Guru, shall be your teacher. This is what you should see; this is what you should honour; this is what should be the object of your discourse.”
Nand Lal could only be ‘Bhai Nand Lal’, who wrote the famous Persian verse ‘Sahib-e-Kmaal Guru Gobind Singh’. He became a devoted follower of Guru Gobind Singh when he came to Guru Sahib seeking protection from Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who was very keen to convert him to Islam since Nand Lal was the best poet of Persian language in his court.
Now the second question by Satwant Singh: ‘Everyone is shaving and nothing is happening in accordance as Guru Ji said ‘Raj karega Khalsa’.
This reminds me of one Sikh Saint I met long time ago in Chandigarh in the mid-1960s. He was visiting some people who were also my relatives and I had gone to see them. He was sitting and casually chatting to his hosts. In due course the topic -as it invariably happens- came around to doing Naam Simran. The Saint cautioned that very bad times are coming from the mid-1970s onwards and the social atmosphere in the country and the world would get polluted.
Then he said that there shall be much bloodshed in the Parikarma of Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar. We were all surprised and someone asked how could the situation be so bad that bloodshed could happen in the Parikarma? He said that pollution in the political and social environment shall become very bad that the impossible would happen. And due to that unfortunate incident and general suppression by the Government many Sikhs would stop keeping their Sikhi-Bana or appearance as a devout Sikh.
Thirdly he said that Muslims shall rise by the end of the century and they would go to utter extremes with much-killings. Then the Muslims shall finish which means that they would change their ways and peacefully co-exist with other faiths because until then they would believe that non-Muslims must be converted or killed.
Then a new leader shall emerge who would be a ‘Khalsa’ and there shall be a new wave and desire in people to emulate or copy the Sikhs. There shall be a desire in many people to take ‘Amrit-Pan’. But there wouldn’t be enough Amritdhari people to prepare Amrit for so many awakened souls. Therefore the awakened souls shall maintain the appearance of a Sikh anyway.
I have been silently and carefully watching the situation and co-relating what the Saint said with the time frame he mentioned. I don’t know how old you are now but with imposition of national emergency in 1975 and total control by Indira Gandhi, the turning point in politics and in the society came from then onwards. Several people who would not have been tolerated in politics in earlier days joined the Congress. At present many criminals or so-called-leaders with criminal background are sitting in the Parliament as well as State Assemblies and making law and plundering the economy.
And you know what happened in 1984 in Harmandir Sahib and to the Sikhs in general. Now a devout Sikh is looked at with suspicion. And I can see many young men who have shaved or removed their turban and instead they wear a cap over the Patka. I feel like telling them but I stop short because I know this was destined to happen.
And you can see what some extremist Muslims are doing in the name of Islam and Allah. In retaliation many Governments headed by Muslims themselves are cracking down upon the extreme Islamic elements. I have received emails from a Muslim -who didn’t say where he was writing from- saying that he visits Muslims countries in West Asia and has noticed an urge among the general masses for an end to these senseless killings. This shows that there is a need to remove certain portions from the Koran which authorize Muslim-men to kill non-Muslims. And in reward the loyal Muslim-men would go to heaven where there shall be many fruit trees with green grass and streams of clear water. And they would be given virgins to enjoy. I often wonder what a Muslim-woman would get to enjoy. This is the typical desire of people who wrote the Koran as they could not see green grass, fruit trees and streams of clear water in the desert of Arabia. And having sex with virgins is a great incentive for men with limited brains.
Moreover the world has become a small place due to dramatic advancement in technology. Now one cannot live in a confined-dogmatic-narrow-minded-socially-polluted environment. We have to co-exist and live together happily.
Now I come to an important part for the Sikhs. My effort in this blog site as well as in my books is to paint the image of a good, brave, exemplary and selflessly Sewa-inclined Sikh as enshrined in the Holy Guru Granth Sahib. In real life such a Sikh wearing the proud turban should stand out as the best example of a human being.
On the contrary if a Sikh is wearing a turban over his uncut hair and indulging in rape, thievery, using bad language in public or in private and doing something which brings a bad name to the whole Sikh community: What is the use of such a Sikh? It is better if such a person, with that kind of character, shaves off and does what he wants to do if he has to do.
Therefore worry not my friend. Quality of a Sikh person is more important than quantity. The Guru lives in good qualities. Have you forgotten that Guru Gobind Singh said when created the Khalsa Panth in March 1699 that ‘wherever there shall be five Khalsa, the Guru shall be there’.
I used to often wonder how the Sikh Regiment does so well in battle. That is because even if there are five soldiers of a Company or a Battalion who are a perfect Khalsa they would carry the rest of the soldiers with them -who may not be very observant Sikhs- because the Guru is there among those five Khalsa soldiers.
I have recently come to know that Uganda, a country in Africa, has honoured Sikhs who had been living there for 100 years by issuing four postal stamps. It is a unique case of a country acknowledging publicly the contribution of a minority from another land. This is a rare occurrence in today’s world but it is a very good example: How a Sikh should live particularly those who have gone out of India.
The Uganda postal service Posta Uganda has commemorated 100 years of Sikh presence in the country by issuing four postage stamps releasing a book titled ‘The Human Rights of Women in Sikhism’, by Justice AS Choudry, in a function held at Resort Beach Hotel, Entebbe, recently.
The four stamps depicted the gurdwara on Sikh Road, Kampala; the Khanda, the Nishan Sahib and the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
This is the first time that a country has issued four triangular stamps in recognition of the contribution of the Sikh community.
The story line in Uganda is given at http://www.asianjournal.ca dated February 09, 2014 where you can view the stamps.
I hope I have been able to answer your questions to your satisfaction.

Time is the bigger factor . Wahtever written in vedas is not being followed out by hindus because of human behaviour . Vedas were written hundred of years ago and percolation of the actual knowlege has got pirated over these hundred of years . And this can happen in any religon let us say in case of sikhs it has been more than 300 years and over these years whatever teachings Guru Granth Sahib has given would be pirated/altered to some extent by some baba or so called spirtual Guru.
But see the beauty of Human believe also that in your blog you stated – A kashmiri pandit got a dream and in dream Lord Shiva told him to go in sharan of Guru Maharaj at anandpur sahib . This means human even if thinks god has form/formless God will help . There is some devine help

      Dear Vikram,
      Thank you for the comments.
There is another article coming in the future about Baba Shri Chand Sahib, the elder son of Guru Nanak, who was born with a thin layer of Vibhuti on his body. He is the reincarnate of Lord Shiv, the Mahedev. I don’t know if Guru Nanak’s sitting in a local cremation ground and medicating day and night upon the Name of God Almighty had anything to do with Shiv Maharaj obliging to take birth as his son but it could be the only explanation.
Baba Shri Chand Sahib was also the first Sikh or ‘Follower’ of his father. He lived up to the age of 149 as per well documented sources and just disappeared when he headed for a forest on a nearby hill after bidding farewell to those who followed him. Since his body was never found, he lives forever and comes and goes as he wills and shows himself to those who love him. In his lifetime, Baba Shri Chand Sahib was considered king of all fakirs and sidhas: More in the forthcoming article.
With that background it was but natural that when the Kashmiri Brahmins went to plead Shiv Maharaj, he directed them to the ‘True Guru’ and not to the Shankaracharyas who project themselves as the guru of the public. That also means a practicing Sikh is more-dear to Shiv Maharaj than anyone else.
When the floods in Uttrakhand happened in 2013, I was not surprised to hear about a massive deluge coming from behind Kedarnath temple and sweeping away the pilgrims. I don’t mean ill towards those who were lost but my ‘Anubhav’ informed me that Lord Shiv was trying to tell people, “The ‘True Guru’ has been given to you and yet you all come here. Go and worship the True Guru who lives amongst you.”
The ‘True Guru’ is the Adi Granth to which Guru Gobind Singh transferred the Guruship in October 1708 and said to his Sikhs assembled at Nanded, “Sab Sikhan ko hukum hai Guru maneyo Granth…..”. Thus he elevated a composition to the status of a ‘Guru’ which is common to everyone in the Indian society since it has devotional verses from the whole segment -from Brahmin to the Shudra and even a Muslim (Baba Farid Shakargand of Pat Patan now in Pakistan). And it’s a matter of personal belief and also one’s past Karma and destiny if one is destined to read Guru Granth Sahib.
Once I met a knowledgeable Brahmin who, after staring at me for some time, said, “Aap bahut kismatwale hain aap ko Guru Granth Sahib padney ko milla hai. Har kisi ko nahi milta,” (You are very lucky that you got an opportunity to read Guru Granth Sahib. Everyone does not get it.)
      With warm regards,

    Thanks tejwant ji

As per vedas no human can become god . Yes human can achieve god or brham .
Even shri krishan ji maharaj was not god but attained knowledge of vedas to attain brham . My only request would be to visit vedmandir.com most of myths about hindusim will get cleared .yes in hinduism has got pirated over a period of time but vedas still are very pure. People can worship god in any form . God is all about the belief that he is there in everything and even where nothing is there.
    With best regards

To the best of my knowledge vedas say that person can live at the max age of 400 years. Not more than this.

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      Dear Vikram,
      Sorry for the delayed reply.
I visited vedmandir.com and read with interest various points discussed therein.
I have been generally familiar with various points of Hinduism from my younger days. True that Vedas –the word means knowledge- are storehouse of various kinds of knowledge, but as you rightly say, they have been pirated. It happens and has happened with other religious books also which originated from West Asia –the Torah, the Bible and the Koran.
New light on the Torah, based to carbon-dating of archaeological items discovered around sites associated with the traditional history of West Asia, says that lot of what is written therein was put down at a much later date than the actual events. This questions the basics of all the three religious books. Believers obviously don’t like such doubts. If you talk of changing the writing to scientifically correct versions, there would be bloodshed. So we remain in the same position and carryon irrelevantly: The point that the world was created in 7 days mentioned in the Old Testament common to all three religions. And many other points in the Koran are vehemently guarded.
The same thing has happened with ancient Hindu scriptures. For example I heard from a Pundits who is well versed with scriptures that the trader or the money lender is listed amongst thieves, scoundrels and criminals in the Atharvaveda. When I asked him if he will show me the portion where it is listed he asked me to get a copy of the Atharvaveda. I went to Gita Press and bought one. After thumbing through he said that I had bought Atharvaveda published by the Arya Samaj. On further query he told me that they had deleted the portion about the traders or the money lenders. I was really surprised because it shows how much our society has degraded.
I once questioned members of a veterans group -all Defence Services Officers- about ‘Gita Updesh’ by Lord Krishna to Arjun as the two armies stood facing each other. My question, “Since Gita Updesh is a long one did the two armies go back to their camps waiting for Lord Krishna to finish? And if so who noted down the Updesh and when was it finally put down in words?” There was much hue and cry as if I had insulted Lord Krishna. No one could give me an answer. There is just blind faith which is obviously difficult to explain,
One very significant thing happened to Hinduism after revival back from Buddhism. Whereas Vedic Hinduism was comparatively liberal, during the revival many restrictions were imposed upon the society and the position of women was downgraded to the status of a shoe. When the mother of the society was treated shabbily it had a very bad effect.
With the concept of 33 crore or 330 million Devies and Devas it became a normal practice to appease the gods for purely personal and selfish needs. This made the society self-centered which was the main reason how a small band of Islamic raiders defeated a vast majority and dominated it in a very cruel manner. There are geographical factors also which combined with the caste system made the Indian mind indifferent to their plight, year after year, tolerating Islamic suppression for many centuries until Guru Gobind Singh made the Khalsa in 1699.
When Islamic raiders marched in, it was only the Kshatriyas who faced them. The others –a large number of Shudras, Vaish and Brahmins- didn’t take part in the fighting because of caste system restrictions. They just waited for the outcome of the battle and were ready to do business with the victor. And unfortunately even the Kshatriyas were not united and were ever busy fighting each other. As I have written earlier, the Shankaracharyas, who were supposed to be guides and custodians of Hindu Dharma, did not make an effort to call a Sabha of the Kshatriyas ask them to put-up a united front to the Islamic raiders.
Now consider the magic of Sikhism. If you ever get a chance to read Gurbani or ask someone to explain various portions: All the devotional hymns are in the voice of the woman. All the Gurus have called themselves the Mahila (wife or woman) of God Almighty -like Mahila-1 means Guru Nanak; Mahila-2 means Guru Angad; Mahila-3 means Guru Amar Das; Mahila-4 means Guru Ram Das and so on and so forth. Guru Nanak elevated the woman to the highest status equal to man which no other major religion allows. Besides Hinduism the Torah of the Jews has relegated the woman to an embodiment of sin or evil -Eve has been blamed for corrupting Adam and God threw them out of heaven because they had sex. The same story is repeated in the Bible and Koran. The woman is meant to be suppressed as per Koran. That is the main reason for all the strife and resistance for education to the girl-child.
There is a book titled ‘A God Who Hates’ by Wafa Sultan, an Arab Doctor from Syria now settled in California, USA. It’s available on-line with http://www.amazon.com and is worth reading to understand what is going on in the Muslim world. Visit link http://www.amazon.com/God-Who-Hates-Courageous-Inflamed/dp/0312538367
In vedmandir.com the Swamyji talks about Brahmacharya which in Gurbani is not permitted. The devotee of Guru Granth Sahib is supposed to live the life of a householder and endevour to reach salvation. If sex was so bad, then why did God make the sex-organs? Christian priests are often accused of having affairs with Nuns and sodomizing young boys while they are supposed to be celibate (live the life of a Brahmacharyan). And Koran has allowed up to four wives if a man can afford them besides being assured that he would get virgins in heaven if he lives the life of a ‘good-Muslim’. A question comes to my mind, “What would a woman get if she lives the life of a good Muslim-woman?”
Any number of Swamies and self-appointed gurus, have ended up on the wrong side of law because they needed sex and they had it by force when they could not find a consensual partner.
On the other hand a Sikh or anyone living the life of a householder and then trying to rise in the spiritual world -rises every day and falls every day. But he or she saves some spiritual essence that is gained with patience thereby slowly and carefully going up spiritually.
When you do meditation, your spiritual powers as well as negative powers become strong. Therefore you cannot go up the ladder of spiritualism if your sexual desire is not vanquished or fully satisfied before you can even try to overcome the other four.
Gurbani asks very clearly, “What is the use of roaming in remote forests, living in solitary confinement on top of a hill or in some cave and searching for god if you are thinking of home, your family, desiring good food, sex and wanting to enjoy all the good things of life?”
Then Gurbani advices, “Meet your ‘True Guru’ and submit yourself to him and seek his blessings and if your Karma permits he would make you meet good Sangat and give you the Naam of God. Then by being immersed in the Naam you shall achieve moksha from all the five evils and Yama will not touch you because you shall have the blessings of the ‘True Guru’.”
Like I have said earlier in the blog ‘Lord Shiv asked the Kashmiri Pundits to go to the Guru who lives in Anandpur Sahib’. Why did Mahadev show them the way to the ‘True Guru’? Because He knew that all the other pretender-gurus were false. And after Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Guru, appointed the Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru, the ‘True Guru’ resides in the Guru Granth Sahib for eternity. Those who are destined to meet their ‘True Guru’ shall start reading Guru Granth Sahib regularly.

      • Surat Singh Says:

Sir (because of your defense background), I read your blog and I was surprised (rather shocked), to me you came out one person who was actually making a case for conversions (read carefully what you wrote Uttrakhand et el), never in the history of Sikhism has anyone openly asked people to convert sikhism. People, chose on their own free will rather than sermons to follow the path. Without prejudice, I would like to point out something, before you hit on other people’s faith (what were the army doing when Krishna was giving sermon, or who was writing down), I , for one, would believe that the Army stood there patiently, as was the custom of those days (who saw it or who believes that is out for debate) and it is no secret that the Geeta was compiled by Ved Vyas as part Mahabharata composition. Now, it may be insane to some that Guru Gobind complied the entire Sri Guru Granth Sahib from his memory, how would you feel is some one mocked that on your face, saying, how is even that possible? But it is and was (to us), You would be petrified , wont you, because as a Sikh you cannot even imagine someone doubting and mocking that.
Your stories are fascinating, and there is absolutely no doubt that world should understand the tenets of Sikhism, but I hardly believe that Sikhs needs to turn into EVANGELISTS in order to propagate Sikhism. The beauty of Sikhism lies in its simplicity and beg that people refrain from making it LUCRATIVE. You can differ from my opinion, but don’t ridicule people’s faith because Gurus never did and no one has the right to do that too.
Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa Wahe guru ji Ki Fathe!

      • tejwantsingh Says:

        Dear Surat Singhji,
Thank you very much for your frank comments but I don’t agree with you because –to the best of my information- no Sikh preacher has ever behaved like an EVANGELISTS by going about distributing Gutkas –the concise prayer books- from door to door or at road crossings like the Christians and Hindus do: The Hare Krishna and the Gita Society have been doing it here in Delhi and Gurgaon and must be doing so elsewhere too. And I have encountered Christians doing it on the road side as well as in trains.
And I am not an Evangelist and have never been though many of my colleagues in the Air Force both, Sikh and Hindus, have -from time to time- sought guidance to understand Gurbani. But the initiative was always from their side and I never ever reminded them to come and listen to me again. And some of them did ask for a Gutka which I didn’t give in the first instance unless they asked for it for the third time. Why? Because, that would show to me how genuine and sincere they were? But two of them, despite my caution, did report to the Intelligence gathering agency of the Air Force during 1982-1992 period. They were probably specifically deputed to seek me out and report if I was going about trying to convert others though I have always believed and propagated that one should follow one’s faith in the correct way: Meaning that a Brahmin should be a good Brahmin who possess knowledge of Brahm etc etc. Alas I have not found any Hindu in the Defence Forces who could propagate good values without emphasizing the greatness of caste system and all those ills which afflict our society. They have always gone-off at a tangent.
My intention in highlighting the anomalies in other major faiths is only to drive home the point that their religious doctrines and the associated in-consistencies affect the society as a whole all over the world. And the Sikhs being a prominently-visible-minority, because of our turban, have to bear the side effects of other people’s faulty and narrow minded beliefs and their misdeeds.
If you are fortunate enough to read Shri Guru Granth Sahib carefully you will notice that starting with Guru Nanak Devji and all the Gurus and all the Saints whose composition are included in the 1430 page Holy Scripture, they have consistently criticized the Brahmin; worship of idols; wandering in the jungle looking for god; fasting; pulling out hair from the scalp like the Jains do; going from one place of pilgrimage to another seeking peace of mind; abandoning the family in favour of Sanyas and yet missing the enjoyment of family life; going on haj when you actually the Koran propagates hatred and persecution of non-Muslims: And there are many-many other anomalies.
On page number 875 of Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Sant Namdev taunts the Brahmins and calls the Hindus ‘annah’ (blind) and the Turku (Muslim) ‘kanah’ (one eyed). Since this is part of Shri Guru Granth Sahib, therefore the Sikhs through the process of reading are criticizing both the Hindus as well as the Muslims.
The Sikhs have all along maintained that the 1984 action against them was a larger conspiracy by the Brahmins to punish them: Perhaps because Indra Gandhi is believed to have been the descendant of Gangu (Ganga Ram Kaul) who betrayed the minor sons of the Tenth Guru to the Mughals. I, somehow, did not believe so but during a recent exchange of views within our ‘Veterans Group’ one of the moderators who is of Brahmin caste mentioned that he was sent to replace a Sikh medical officer at Amritsar, who the authorities felt may sympathize with the armed Sikhs. And while showing off his contribution to the 1984 carnage, this moderator mentioned that Guru Arjan Dev was killed by Mughal Emperor Jahangir because the Guru Granth Sahib criticizes both the Brahmins and Muslims: Whereas the historical fact is different –why Jahangir did it- and has been mentioned by me at the beginning of this article. Therefore the contention that it was a Brahmin plot to insult the Sikh community in 1984 perhaps holds true.
Therefore all Sikhs are finding fault with all other faiths by reading the Holy Guru Granth Sahib. And I have not done anything different while trying to remind Hindus –in the same way as the contributors to the Holy Scripture have done in their compositions- that Lord Shiva is trying to tell them that ‘the-ultimate-True-Guru’ lives among them and they don’t have to go wandering and looking for God elsewhere. But the Bani says, “Only those who are destined will come to behold the ‘True Guru’ and others will remain in the ‘perpetual-mist”.
Criticism of Brahmins is justified because their control over the Indian society through the caste system has done immense damage to its wellbeing. Both –the Brahmin and the Bania- have pillaged our society to the hilt. The Brahmin kept education to himself and the rest of the society was always illiterate except the Bania community who had their secret script called Landey or Modki which no one else could read. Thus the majority lived under constant stress and anxiety. If you read Manu Smriti -which lists horrific punishments for Shudras- there is a strong case of human rights violation –if it can be applied in retrospect against the Brahmins now (unfortunately it would be futile).
While living under such suppression the brain of the other castes, who were the majority, was not allowed to develop to its full capacity. Since we Indian cremate the dead, there is no way to know the differences in the sizes of skulls of the Brahmin, the Bania and the other lower castes.
A recent study by Ann H. Ross, an anthropologist at North Carolina State University USA appeared in ‘Annals of Human Biology’. Her study, based on data collected by other anthropologist, shows that environment affects the growth of our brain. To understand inferior development of their brains this point is very relevant for those of the Indian society who have been disadvantaged by the caste system’s suppression through thousands of years.
Studies prior to abovementioned study by Ann H. Ross have shown that the cranial length of the skull is affected by stress. For the new research, the authors looked at the skull measurements of adult Cherokees (Native Americans also called Indians) born between 1783 and 1874, data collected in the late 19th century by the anthropologist Franz Boas and his students. The skulls of those born later in the period were significantly shorter than those born earlier.
The Cherokees adults were selected for the study because this Native American tribe was forcibly evicted from their Southeastern homeland by the American Federal Government in the 1830s. The Native Americans were sent on forced marches to eastern Oklahoma much to the west of their original homeland. Their journey came to be known as the Trail of Tears, an ordeal of disease, starvation and death. Now the study of Cherokee remains suggests that the stress interfered with the normal growth of their skulls. This interesting subject was published by New York Times on-line. You may copy link below in your browser if you wish to read it.

What I am trying to convey is that in the Indian environment it is difficult to calculate -due to lack of solid evidence like the remains and Cherokee skulls- how much the lower castes suffered and how much their brain did not develop compared to the educated Brahmin and Bania class. It is only during the last 50 years in the case of lowest castes like sweepers and leather workers and during the previous 100 years in the case of the landed classes (who were also basically illiterate), that education has made some difference. But the quality of employability or the type of jobs they can aspire for -compared to individuals from Brahmin and Bania castes- is something they will continue to be less-advantaged for a very long-long time.
The Hindus have never ever been chorological minded unlike the Europeans, Arabs and Persians. Perhaps it was a deliberate decision by the Brahmin policy makers of the yore not to record as to who was punished in which way and how much Dakshina was ‘extracted’ from whom and how many of the low caste were put to death for challenging the authority of the ‘head-of-the-society’. With the result we have all been thriving on myths created by the clever Brahmin and our ancestors have been lapping it up and wondering at his ingenuity. To me the whole thing smells like a massive conspiracy.
No doubt we can debate about Geeta’s sermon and the question if the two armies were dismissed and told to hold-fire until Lord Krishna could prevail upon Arjuna to fight his kith and kin. A pragmatic mind would even assume that both of them may have retired to a comfortable room where the sermon could carry on with miraculous 3D revelations about the universe and many faces of God projected into Arjuna’s mind. Such a pragmatic-minded person is not trying to insult Lord Krishna though the reaction of the blind-faith-believers would consider it an insult.
Now I come to another interesting point. Ever since carbon dating science came into being along with increasing anthropological techniques, I have honestly wondered about the origin of human being and the relevance of the four Yugas story of Hindu mythology. Therefore I asked a knowledgeable Pundit about the age of the four Yugas. This is what he gave me along with a copy of a booklet where the age is published every year for the benefit of professional astrologers. I believe they use this information for computing various aspects of the predictions they make.
The age of Yugas is mentioned below:-
According to Hindu mythology, our world (Sristi) was created about 1955885110 years ago which comes 1955 million years approximately which would measure up to 1.9 billion years. But according to the Big Bang theory -the prevailing cosmological model for the early development of the universe- the world was created 13.82 billion years ago, which is thus considered the age of the universe by all modern Astronomical assumptions. The two ideas –the Hindu mythological belief and the Big Bang theory- are out by about 12 billion years. But perhaps I can give benefit of doubt to the Hindu belief -life started in the oceans about 1955885110 years ago or 1.9 billion years- which could be considered our Sristi, the world.
        Satya Yuga ran for 1728000 years which comes to 1.7 million years approximately;
        Treta Yuga (which should have been the third in succession but for some reason it came in the second place) ran for 1296000 years which comes to 1.2 million years approximately;
        Dwapar Yuga ran for 864000 years which comes to 0.8 million years approximately and;
Kali Yuga with an age of 432000 years (0.4 million years approximately) started running 5110 years ago and it is supposed to run for another 426890 years.
If the age of Yugas is added up, including the 5110 years that Kali Yuga has run, it comes to a total of 3893110 years which is 3.89 million years approximately.
According to Hindu myth there were 4 kinds of gods in the Satya Yuga and all human being were living as per Dharma.
In the Treta Yuga which started 2165110 years ago which is 2.1 million years ago (minus 1728000 from the total age of all Yugas -3893110 years) the main god was Shri Ram Chandra besides Vaman and Parshuram. Rama is believed to have attacked Shri Lanka to retrieve Seeta. According to my queries with Sri Lankan Air Force officers in 1988 (when I was part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force) I was told that there was no mention in their history of any king by the name Ravana or about any battle where an Indian king named Ram Chandra attached the island nation: Not even in their mythology.
But, if you look at anthropological finds and their carbon dating, –not one but several of them- human beings were still evolving from Chimpanzees about 2 million years ago. Metallurgical tools did not exist then and Chimpanzees were believed to have used stones to crush nuts or dig for roots and fight their wars with stone tools. Therefore one has to ask, “How Shri Ram Chandra and King Ravana could have existed –and all those weapons we hear and read about being wielded in battle- when the human race was still evolving.”
Then Dwapar Yuga started 869110 years ago (minus 1296000 of Treta from 2165110 years) which comes to 0.8 million years approximately. Shri Krishna and Baldev were two gods and the famous battle of Mahabharta is believed to have been fought in the Krukshetra region of north India.
Anthropological discoveries suggest that this is the time when one segment of human being moved out of Africa and started spreading through Asia finding their way to Australia migrating through India and south eastern Asia. Metallurgical tools did not exist and people were still using stone tools. Then the earth went into an ice-age from which it started recovering about 20,000 years ago. The Himalayas were still covered with massive glaciers which started melting and created the great north India planes and the river system. Therefore one has to ask the same question here: How could the story of Mahabharta and the characters there-in be true including the Geeta sermon?
When BR Chopra was working on Mahabharta TV serial and we read about it in the papers, I happened to be posted at one of the Air Force Headquarters in New Delhi. I shared my office with another officer of Brahmin caste who was believed to be well-read on Hindu scriptures and could quote. He told me that the story of Mahabharta was a work of fiction -the largest of its kind in the world.
Yet there is another link on the Internet which validates the age of Kali Yuga and its onset as mentioned above. This link talks about the end of Mahabharta battle, the ascending of Lord Krishna to His heavenly abode and the start of Kali Yuga.
You can paste this link in your browser http://www.indiadivine.org/news/articles-on-hinduism/when-did-the-kali-yuga-begin-r737
Yet there is another issue I highlight here to bring home the point about myths being created by the clever Brahmin community to suit their ulterior motives.
This ‘another-issue’ is concerning River Saraswati and its demise and fading-out from the prominent river system of north India. There is a book titled “The Lost River: On the Trail of the Saraswati” by Michel Danino published in 2010 by Penguin Books India and available on http://www.amazom.com This book starts off by quoting references from ancient Indian scriptures to validate and authenticate the existence of River Saraswati, once upon a time. All ancient Indian scriptures don’t give any time frame unfortunately.
The author then quotes authentic records of soil and water testing done by various experts –both Indian and foreign- in India as well as in Pakistan with modern testing techniques enabled by Nuclear Physics using Radio Carbon dating based on Carbon-14 isotope: Nuclear Physics has, even otherwise, helped fields of geology, oceanography, archeology and several other disciplines.
Then the book goes on to show Satellite Imagery of northern India. After processing by advanced digital enhancing technique the imagery amazingly highlights numerous palaeo-beds and palaeo-channels that crisscross the Sutlej, Ghagar, Saraswati and Yamuna watershed regions which are not visible if you stand at ground level. Downstream, across the International border, similar extremely wide palaeo-beds and channels in the Sind desert show that a massive river flowed through them once upon a time.
And going a little east into the Rajasthan region -south of Hisar- there are numerous channels and beds running generally in the south westerly direction heading towards the Rann of Kutch. Indian experts opine that probably in the ancient times a massive river –presumably the Saraswati- flowed in those beds which are now called Luni (meaning salted or brackish) River.
If you draw a line from Delhi ridge north-north-eastward towards the foothills heading between present day Paonta Sahib and Nahan one can clearly appreciate the watershed: Streams flowing westward or eastward. Since the Indian landmass is still pushing into the Eurasian landmass at the rate of 6 cm per year the northern plates are highly prone to seismic events and earthquakes. Sudden change of water-flow direction happens even now. In the past this natural process seemed to have repeated periodically.
Modern techniques have enabled testing of soils, wooden sediment-residuals and the inner-Himalayan-sand brought down by various glacier fed rivers which has helped bracket their age around 3700 BC to 3200 BC. Expert observation is that very little sediment-residuals arrived in the downstream thereafter indicating drying up.
Satellite Imagery of the Himalayan foothills shows that the glacier fed Yamuna once flowed westward in a wide valley (possible due to a big river and not a small stream) and came out of the hills about 50 kms west of the point where it now comes out at Paonta Sahib. Two very wide palaeo-beds and channels of a river now called Chautang are being assumed as the former-beds of the Yamuna in the western watershed region. The Yamuna used to flow in that bed and join the Saraswati between Hanumangarh and Suratgarh. Thereafter it was a massive river and continued to flow southward parallel to the Indus emptying into the Rann of Kutch.
Similarly the glacier fed Sutlej has a notorious background. It is listed in the Rig Veda as ‘Shutudri’ -meaning the fast flowing and is also called ‘Shatadru’ in the post Vedic literature -meaning a hundred channels. This is corroborated by Satellite Imagery and one can see several of its palaeo-beds and channels in the Malwa region. One such palaeo-bed of the Sutlej runs southward after coming out of the hills near Ropar and joins the Ghaggar’s palaeo-bed south of Patiala: The seasonal ‘Patialeywali’ Nadi now runs within the original bed of the Sutlej.
Earthquakes in the northern region have left their telltale marks. One such massive earthquake, about 2700 BC caused a cleavage in the Ghaggar bed near Kalibanga –a Harappan era settlement. The same earthquake is believed to have caused a rupture in the foothills near present day Paonta Sahib. The Yamuna which was flowing westward in the valley came out through this rupture and began to flow at its present position east of Delhi.
Yamuna is not the only one which changed course. The massive earthquake which caused it to flow eastward is also believed to have shifted the Sutlej westward from Ropar –where it now runs. Since the glacier fed Yamuna and Sutlej rivers were major source of water for the Saraswati, their shifting away caused it to dry up leaving very little residual water from seasonal streams.
But mythology created by the clever Brahmin is different. While writing about the virtues of Saraswati in the Rig Veda a myth was created when the massive river dried up. And all myths are always associated with some god or goddess probably to create a sense of awe among the gullible listeners. What could not be explained by any scientific means or any logical assumption became a religious myth.
The myth goes that Balram the brother of Lord Krishna once went to the sea where the mighty Saraswati emptied. There were 108 Tirath Sthans on the might Saraswati River and Balram started worshipping at each starting from the sea. After reaching the last Tirath Sthan at the source of the river in the Himalayan foothills, he asked Saraswati for some water for his agricultural fields near Mathura. But the haughty Saraswati ignored him. Balram then took his shear plow and dug it into the back of Saraswati and made a channel: In the process he took away all the water of the Yamuna.
The second myth is in the Punjab region. There was a king called Puran who had attained great supernatural powers after doing lot of penance. When there was a draught in his kingdom he went to Saraswati and asked for some water but the mighty river ignored him. Incensed he used his supernatural power to divert the Sutlej and forced the mighty Saraswati to dry up.
The point I am trying to convey is that what happened as a natural-phenomena the clever Brahmin who did all the talking and preaching to the lay and the gullible listeners, created everything into a myth to show his invincibility. Perhaps one could say that the Brahmins have been great fictional-writers who wrote volumes to keep the trade of the clan going and everyone listening to their discourses as the holy ‘Sat-Sang’.
The next point is about the secrets of science believed to have been revealed to the Rishis who were all Brahmins. They are –the flying machine which King Rama is believed to have used to fly back from Sri Lanka; rocket technology, multi-arrow-heads used in the battle of Mahabharta (as shown in the TV serial of the same name) like we now have the multi-barrel-rocket weapon system; Brahm-Shatra equivalent of nuclear weapon and many others. Their concepts were written down in Sanskrit which only the Brahmin could understand. Therefore these concepts germinated in the highly developed brain of the Brahmin and died with him because he refused to share with anyone outside his caste.
Except for the numerals 1 to 0 (one to zero) which were developed by Aryabhata, no other scientific inventions or discoveries can be attributed or credited to Indians. The numerals went out of India through trade with Arabs and they developed the Algebra from them. When the Muslim Arabs invaded Spain the numerals were introduced to the Europeans who were using the Roman counting system until then which had serious limitations with no concept of Zero. Thus the numerals came to be known as Arabic numerals with no credit to the Indians. I have mentioned to several European origin people that the Arabic numerals were actually developed by Indians more than 1500 years ago but they were skeptical and not keen to believe and give credit to Aryabhata.
All scientific inventions and discoveries came to India from Europe or America. Had the Brahmins been open minded and not selfish, the trend would have been different: India would have been credited with major scientific studies.
Recently a book titled “Women Liberation through the Prism of Sikh Faith” by Prabhjot Kaur was published in 2012 by Wisdom Collection an imprint of GS Distribution Inc. This well researched book highlights that during Vedic times the position of woman was equal to man. But when Hindu Dharma was revived after Buddhism, her status was relegated to that of a man’s shoes through the Smrities which were written to guide the revived Hindus: Many restrictions were imposed upon the society which were not there during the Vedic times.
While the status of woman in Judaism, Christianity and Islam is equal to an evil-being just because Eve had sex with Adam: The whole idea of relegating her to the lowest strata of the society has had bad ramifications. On the other hand Guru Nanak has gone and put the woman at the highest pedestal as you may be aware about it in Gurbani.
You may have accused me of promoting Sikhism but the whole Bani itself promotes the concept of the True Guru who alone can help you reach Almighty God.
On the other hand the Brahmin has been advocating -and does so even now- that he is the true guru and can help the gullible listeners to achieve moksha.
The overbearing influence of the Brahmin on the Indian society has had an entrapping effect throughout history. All those tribes from Central Asia which invaded India with the aim to find a better land than the one they were leaving behind walked into the ‘Brahmin’s trap’. Their brains stagnated and didn’t develop as much as their cousins’ who opted to go westward to Europe. Prime example is the Jat tribe of India who, according to Indian historians, are the far off cousins of the Germans. The word Jat is derived from Punjabi word Jutt which itself can be assumed to have derived from name of Jutes tribe.
Jutes was one of the several Gothic tribes which moved out of Central Asia around 200 AD and broke into two waves for some unknown reason. One wave went to Europe and the Romans called them German. Perhaps more of the Jutes tribes migrated to Punjab via Afghanistan and thus the name Jutt.
And what is the status of the Jutt: The Punjabi Bania, the Khatri, calls him Moorakh. On the other hand the Jutt’s cousin the German have influenced almost the whole of Europe and have contributed much to the scientific field.
But recovery from the side effect of the clutches of the Brahmins caste system will take time as educational opportunities improve for the disadvantaged.
I hope I have made my point through very long discourse.
        With warm regards,
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru ji Ki Fateh!

    Respected Sir,

This is my first time i am posting a comment on a website, except social media. I couldn’t stop myself from commenting when i saw your interesting posts. You are an intellect. I am really inspired by your writings, Though as on today many Sikhs are not aware of these facts and incidents. My passion is reading historical books. When i was reading books on Sikhi i felt a great enthusiasm in me and started craving for more and more.i do research on internet whenever i get time about the history and Sikh. Influence of Sikhi is vernacular for me as i was born in Punjab. Having listened to shabads every morning from the gurudwara sahib in front of our house.I can’t forget those days.

    I have few questions:

    1) Where i can get the online access to the Sri Guru Granth sahib in its original text and translation ( Both).

    Thanks

      Dear Sudhanshu,
Thank you for the comments. And I am sorry for the delayed reply. I was away to America visiting my daughters and since weather in that country has become unpredictable, I was slightly indisposed having been used to warm and dry weather of north India.
Gurbani states -not once but many times- that those who develop the love of the Guru and God are the truly blessed and chosen ones. You appear to be one of those good souls who has been close to a Gurdwara and whose ears have been lucky enough to listen to the musical notes of Gurbani. May Waheguru ji always keep you near Himself!
I have a CD which was given to me by someone in America a few years ago. I have seen that the same translation in English with the Gurmukhi scrip also showing in Roman-Urdu and Gurmukhi is being used by many Gurdwaras. They project the Shabad on a screen as the Raggies sing along and the Sangat can read the translations and its meanings and try to understand -what does the Shabad being sung actually means.
It is a Word Document but I could not find it on the Web. If you give me your address I will forward a copy of the CD by courier free of cost. You can load it on your computer and read selected pages of the Complete Guru Granth Sahib from Adi to Ant.
You can email me at singhtejwant@hotmail.com

  11. sajid syed Says:

    My dear respected sir,
You have written very well but turned historical facts into your fanciful imagination; and taken liberties often taken by novelists of historical fiction. There is no question about the ruthlessness of the Moghuls but were the Rajputs or Sikh rulers (later) any better ? I can recount plenty of facts and historical anecdotes of the Sikh rulers in Lahore who raped, plundered and pillaged their poor Muslim peasants.
But surely poor Muslims too suffered at the hands of the Moghuls. And for that matter, poor people everywhere no matter their caste or creed suffered under Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs. And unfortunately, they still do …..
The Sikhs are a very brave and honorable race but were oppressed by the Moghuls ( not all Muslims are Moghuls) ; and used later by the British to fight the Moghuls and when they didn’t have any need for them , they decided to dispense them too. All the Sikhs who fought for the British as their lackeyes against Hindu and Muslim freedom fighters in the First War of Independence of 1857 were given large jaagirs as rewards( that explains so many Sikhs owning havelis in Lucknow after the Battle of Residency). And many were brought to Canada ad given large tracts of land to cultivate ( read “sikhs in vancouver”)
So it appears that that whoever has held power has had a tendency to oppress the weak – regardless of religion.
So my dear Sardar Sahab, please do not preach hate agianst one another . You can do so much better with love !

    Submitted respectfully,
    Sajid Syed

P.S. * I also wanted to correct you for a comment you made stating that the Holy Koran allows Muslims to take up the sword to convert people to Islam. That is simply not true. One is allowed to take the sword only to fight against injustice ( whether against Sikh, Hindu or Muslim) . As matter of fact in Sura Qafiroon – the verse which talks about treatment of non-mulsims ( idol worshippers) recites that “Explain to them about Islam but if they do not convert then – unto you your religion, and unto them, their religion”.

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      My dear Sajid Syed,

Very sorry for the delayed reply: I was very busy with something and had no time to devote my mind fully to your comments.

I have read through my write-up just to check where I have ‘preached hate against one another’ and I could not find any words which could imply that. I suppose what you mean is that by pointing out negative aspects of Islam I may be inadvertently making non-Muslims hate Islam: Does truth hurt?

The easiest thing to do is to speak the truth because truth is spoken once only. Truth will always be truth no matter how long it takes to dig it out despite liars telling thousands of lies to dump truth in a deep ditch. History is full of such examples.
On the contrary the most difficult thing to do is to speak lies because one lie will have to be covered up with thousands of lies. And that would cause tension and beset the liar with unheard of maladies. Liars will always be caught and hung.

Yet both ‘Truth and a Lie’ create problems but Truth is a ‘lesser-problem’.

      What is the ‘Truth’?

The ‘Truth’ is that Koran contains both positive and negative preaching from the point of view of those who are critically affected by it. It is as if those who compiled it must have allowed for all options to be exercised by its followers in times to come. In retrospect now it looks that if and when the Muslims are on a weaker wicket then they can quote the passive parts and take shelter behind those passages. And when they are on the ‘giving-end’ of the sword they can dictates conditions and justify them as per the Koran.

If the passive parts are there and the negative aspects are not there, then please explain what is happening right now in Syria and Iraq? The plight of minorities is even worst with women and children being sold off as sex slaves. What happened in Iran from 1979 onward is an old story. And now it has been happening in Pakistan where the fundamentalist were created and encouraged by General Zia-ul-Haq, the dictator who killed Zulfikar Bhutto. His aim was to create a situation where revenge can be taken for Pakistan’s defeat in 1971 war.
The fact is that if Mughal Emperors from Jahangir to Aurangzeb had not done what they did to non-Muslim we Sikhs would have remained rosary wielding pious sheep and not been converted into the selfless Khalsa. Perhaps, it was destined to be like that. We are the perfect example in history to show how tyranny always brings forth a counter.

Tell me which religion other than Islam justifies selling helpless women and children in slavery and for sex? The problem is that the thinking process of ‘hardcore-Muslims’ in the past tense and ‘moderate-Muslims’, who want to live in the 21st Century and go along with the rest of the world are mute spectators. They are over-awed by those who threaten them with dire consequences. Even then can we take the ‘moderate-Muslims’ on their face-value when the ultimate duty and aim of all Muslims is to enforce Islam all over the world?

Let me inform you about something I have had the privilege to listen to from close range. I was a Prisoner of War in Pakistan in 1972 as a result of the 1971 war which created Bangladesh. Locked up in a tiny cell I was under the supervision of Pakistan Air Force Police along with 11 other colleague-pilots from the Indian Air Force in separate cells. One particular person named Corporal Ishfaque Rana –a Rajput- chatted with me whenever he found time from his official duties. He was keen to know the truth about Kashmir and compare against what he had heard -the one sided information from their official media.
One day he said something very interesting, “My history teacher said that during the Muslim rule in Punjab –he did not say Mughal rule- the Sikhs were treated very badly often in inhuman ways. But when they became rulers the Sikhs treated their Muslim subjects in the most humane manner. It’s a matter of shame that we have not been able to pay back the Sikhs majority of who are our brothers from the same Gotra and same castes.”

Corporal Ishfaque Rana did not say even once say that the Sikhs committed atrocities upon Muslims of Punjab unlike what you are saying. Yes we were very tough and rough with Pathans because they had been raiding the plains of Punjab.

Moreover Psychologists say, “Opinions can often be influenced by ‘confirmation bias.” A large body of research shows that people search for evidence to support their preexisting viewpoints and then interpret that information in a way that reinforces their beliefs.

“It’s the tendency to seek out and give greater weight to information that confirms what we think rather than contradicts it,” said Scott Plous, a psychology professor at Wesleyan University in Connecticut USA.

Confirmation bias seemed to be running rampant in most preset ideas. Perhaps that may be the reason why I write like this because I have grown up seeing and hearing things about atrocities committed by Muslims upon our Gurus as well as Sikhs who were fighting for their right and the freedom to worship as they pleased. And I saw enough during the partition to form an opinion: The first train carrying Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan was massacred by Muslim League goondas. In return the Sikhs and Hindus did the same. After the necessary retaliation there was no massacre of trains. It’s unfortunate that sometimes one has to reply in the same language since some people don’t understand nice language.

But for some aberrations we generally have had very pleasant relationship with Punjabi Muslims including Pathans who respected us. Our historical record about Muslims who still live in Malerkotla, Punjab is well known -their Nawab was member of the Akali Dal and a regular MLA. They were blessed by Guru Gobind Singh and did not migrate to Pakistan during 1947’s partition. They treat us most cordially and we respect them. In their homes and commercial establishments they have a framed copy of the Hukumnama by Guru Gobind Singh. During partition all those Muslims who went into Malerkotla Riyasat were safe.

And the Pathans respect for the Sikhs is basically because we were the only ones who faced them squarely in battle –bullet for bullet and sword for sword. A ‘good’ fight is like a favorite dish for the Pathans. My father, who was in the Army and was posted in the Pathan lands before he went to West Asia to fight during the Second World War, often talked about Pathan-ways. There is a book titled ‘The Frontier 1839-1947 The Story of North West Frontier of India’ written by Major General J. G. Elliot well after the formation of Pakistan. He gives a detailed account about Pathan character and the type of territory they live in. And he writes in chapter 10 on page 130 that the Pathans used to often shout from their hill top fortresses down to the British Indian Army whenever it went to fight with them on some issue or the other between the period 1850s to 1935. Their famous words were, “Why have you brought these ‘vegetables’ to fight us. Send the Indians with the red-turban or the Gora-soldiers with the white hats.” ‘Vegetables’ were the other non-Sikh Indian soldiers.

The Sikhs fighting for the English was purely a voluntary employment as much as it was for Muslim and Hindu soldiers who hailed from Bengal, Bihar, UP, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan as well as from the south like Madrasis and Marathas. You seem to target only the Sikhs which has become a favorite pastime for everyone after Independence blaming us for supporting the English during the 1857 Mutiny. We were and still are a microscopic minority yet prominently visible among thousands because we dare to wear our turban while others have abandoned it.

If you call the Sikhs ‘lackeys’ then the biggest ‘lackeys’ came from the rest of India: Who fought for the English from 1750s onward up to the time Battle of Delhi was fought on 11 September 1803 at Patparganj -nowadays NOIDA- and the English gained control over the Mughal Emperor. The biggest lackey was Mir Jafar who walked away with a large part of the Army because he had an understanding with Robert Clive. That enabled just 200 odd soldiers of the East Indian Company to win the ‘Battle of Plassey’ on 23 June 1757 and the English went on to establish the biggest ‘Corporate Empire’ in the world. It was YOU who helped them do so.

It is mischievous and deliberately misleading to call the ‘1857 Sepoy Mutiny’ the ‘First War of Independence of 1857.’ I came across a book the manuscript which was written by a Marathi Brahmin as he travelled through the areas where the Sepoys were busy looting poor and rich alike as the rule of law had deteriorated. The manuscript was recently translated from Marathi to English and published. There was no such feeling of ‘fighting for Bharat Mata’. It was opportunity to loot and nothing else by a bunch of mutinous Sepoys. Yes in some places like Lukhnow and Delhi they stood their ground but lost due to several Muslim and Hindu spies were active in their ranks. In the wake of this malicious trend to blame the minority Sikhs for all their own misdoings, Dr. Shamsul Islam, who teaches Political Science in Satyawati College (University of Delhi) has written two booklets titled, ‘Letters of Spies and Delhi was lost’ and ‘Rebel Sikhs in 1857’ both published by Vani Prakashan, Daryaganj, Delhi. He lists out the number Muslim and Hindu spies who worked for the English and criticizes those who blame the Sikhs without any deeper thought.

And you have not mentioned the names of all those Indian rulers who helped the English to regain control –the Scindhia ruler helped defeat Jhansi ki Rani; one of the Mughal Prince was secretly aligned with the English; many Agarwal families concealed English officers and their families at the District level in their basements and brought them out when the dust settled; the Nizam of Hyderabad; the Maharaja of Mysore; the Maharaja of Kashmir. The list is very long.

And talking about Kashmir problem created by Maharaja Hari Singh the last ruler: Had he not been dilly-dallying Pakistan would not have had the guts to attack with tribal Pathans led by Pakistan Army’s officers in civilian clothes in October 1947. And the first troops to land in Srinagar were Sikhs and they pushed the raiders all the way back across the hills. It’s the stupidity of Nehru that when the enemy was on the run he went to the UN: And we are stuck with a problem where India and Pakistan have blown away corers and crores of our wealth fighting over this piece of land. And you may not know that Nehru was keen to disband the Indian Army immediately after Independence. When someone asked him how he would control the country he said that the Police would do it. In retrospect the attack by Pakistan saved the Indian Army from disbandment.

And the biggest traitor was Gulab Singh (1792–1857) the founder of the Dogra dynasty of Kashmir and ancestor of Maharaja Hari Singh and Dr Karan Singh. He was accepted as the first Maharaja of Kashmir by the English since Jammu and Kashmir was the second largest princely state in British India after Hyderabad in south India. He was the one who stabbed his Sikh masters in the back in 1846 through the Treaty of Amritsar and formalised the sale of Kashmir by the British to him for 7,500,000 rupees –out of the treasure he had looted from Lahore.

Gulab Singh had put his complete Dogra Army at the disposal of the English during the siege of Delhi in 1857. But when the first volley of fire came from the Sepoys inside Delhi Fort the Dogra Army ran for their lives. In disgust the English returned the whole Dogra Army to Gulab Singh –so much for their bravery. The English always respected the brave like the Pathans do.

Why have you targeted the Sikhs only? Are you part of the anti-Sikh mafia which committed all those atrocities in 1984? The Citizens of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh should be ever grateful to the Sikhs for keeping the Indian Nation united due to their support to the English in 1857. We did a great favour because India had never ever been fully united from shore to shore and up to the base of the Himalaya and the Hindukush Mountains.

You probably are not aware of the military situation from 1835 onwards when Russia was expanding southward and had already annexed Uzbekistan and other areas north of Afghanistan. I as a Military man have read about it since it is part of my profession. Civilians in our country don’t even know how to use a gun besides understanding the global game.

The Russians had sent an envoy to Kabul to seek a treaty. Their aim was to find way through Afghanistan to the warm waters of Arabian Sea: They wanted a base in the Arabian Sea for their Navy since other European powers had exploited the Indian Ocean to their advantage. The British saw the writing on the wall and tried to stall the Russian game by installing a puppet king on the Kabul throne. By then they had installed several pliable puppet kings throughout India and tried to install Shah Shuja Durrani as the next King of Afghanistan in 1839.

Shah Shuja had been earlier ousted by his cousin in 1809 and imprisoned in a dungeon in Srinagar, Kashmir which was part of Afghanistan then. His Begum escaped to Punjab and Maharaja Ranjit Singh sheltered her at Rawalpindi, now next to Islamabad the capital of Pakistan. She requested Maharaja Ranjit Singh to retrieve her husband from Kashmir. A bargain was stuck.

She had the Kohinoor diamond with her, which had been earlier unscrupulously taken from Mughal Emperor Mohamad Shah Rangila by Nadir Shah the King of Persia when he invaded India and entered Delhi in 1739. And when Nadir Shah was killed in Iran during a mutiny all his treasure -looted from Delhi and the surrounding villages- fell into the hands of Ahmad Shah Abdali, the Durrani who one of his Generals. He used the wealth to buy off all tribal heads and carved out Afghanistan from the Persian Empire: Until then there was no ‘Afghanistan’.

Therefore the priority of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was to get back the stolen diamond and a deal was struck with the Begum. Shah Shuja was retrieved and brought to Rawalpindi and Kashmir became part of the Sikh Empire and is part of India because of sacrifices of the Sikhs with no contribution by the ‘Vegetables’ -the non-Sikh soldiers.

The Shah placed the Kohinoor diamond on the Maharaja’s palm and left for Ludhiana and further on to Calcutta where he asked the English help to gain his throne. Thus the First Afghan War took place in 1839 and the English managed to keep the Russians out.
Now if you have any foresight you should have understood what I am trying tell. If you have not understood this point then try to look at the situation as a larger picture. Had the English been defeated in 1857 a conglomerate of Nawabs and Kings with a rabble of unscrupulous Sepoys without a cohesive strategic plan for a united India would have fought with each other for an upper hand. And some of these Nawabs and Kings would have gone running to the Russians for help and some would have approached the French at Pondicherry and some may have knocked on the door of the Portuguese at Goa. Do I have to explain to you how the clock would have been reset to pre-1757 days and broken apart a united India?

The English had united India after annexation of Punjab in which the Bengal Army Native troops from the rest of India supported them against the Sikhs. My ancestors fought in those and we lost 18 men during the two Anglo-Sikhs Wars. The English needed to fight 7 battles with lot of treachery by Gulab Singh and his associates to defeat the Khalsa Army. The other two treacherous pigs were two brothers Tek Singh and Lal Singh who had been made Generals of the Sikh Army by Gulab Singh who was the Prime Minister at Lahore. All three were secretly in touch with the English at Ludhiana and Ferozepur the two forward out posts south of Sutlej River which was the border.

You may like to read a book by Captain Amarinder Singh, the Former Maharaja of Patiala and the former Chief Minister of Punjab titled ‘The Last Sunset: The Rise & Fall of the Lahore Durbar’ available on http://www.amazon.com and Kindle. You can really gauge the treachery which took place and you will get an idea of all those Bengal Army Units with Indian soldiers who fought against the Sikhs: Some of them were disbanded in 1857 and some are still part of Indian Army with different names.

Tek Singh and Lal Singh were actually Gaur Brahmins from Eekari village in Sardhana tehsil of Meerut district and had taken up employment on the tail of their uncle Khushal Singh. Opting for the Sikh faith was an employment ruse.

Battle of Ferozeshah is a prime example of treachery by these two ‘Brahmins-turned-Sikhs’ brothers. This battle was fought on 21 December and 22 December 1845 between the British and the Sikhs, at village Ferozeshah south of Sutlej River. The British were led by Sir Hugh Gough and Governor General of Bengal, Sir Henry Hardinge, while the Sikhs were led by Lal Singh. The English ran out of ammunition against the relentless fire by General Ilahi Baksh the trusted Muslim who headed the Sikh army’s artillery. Lord Henry Hardinge, when he realized that the Sikhs were going to capture him, destroyed all Top Secret papers in anticipation.

The Sikh Army had a reserve of 30,000 fresh troops but Tej Singh -Lal Singh’s brother- who had an understanding with the English Agent at Ferozepur, did not attack the English despite his Commanders urging him to do so. Instead he took away those 30,000 fresh troops north of Sutlej River giving enough time for the English ammunition supply to reach. Rest is all history as they say.

Therefore the Brahmins from UP stabbed us in the back and they were the biggest ‘lackeys’ perhaps more than even all those who took up employment in the Bengal Army and helped the English reach right up to Punjab. Can you imagine if the Governor General of Bengal, Sir Henry Hardinge, had been captured alive: What all could have happened?

Moreover during the Freedom Struggle 73% of those killed by shooting, hanging and deportation to Kala Pani Jail in Andaman Islands were Sikhs. This is as per historical records of the Congress. May I ask you, “Where were the rest of the Indians when the Sikhs were going out of their way for the Freedom Struggle when their count is only 2% of the total population? Where were the rest of the Indians and why were they hiding?”

Why do the Sikhs always go out of their way to help others or participate in any action from which everyone else benefits? Why don’t the Sikhs say ‘You’re a Muslim so you will not get help or you will not get water or food?’ That is because the philosophy preached by Guru Nanak and all the Gurus who followed him and also in the ‘Word’ of Guru Granth Sahib is universal: ‘Sarbat da Bhala’ meaning ‘Welfare for all’.

When Guru Nanak went westward in Asia preaching his ideology he stopped at Baghdad where the spot is marked by a building just outside the railway station. Then he went to Mecca where his pair of Kharavan –wooden slippers worn by Indian Holy men- is preserved with the caption “Peer Baba Nanak”. An Indian Air Force Muslim pilot who had gone to Iraq to train their Air Force in 1980s as part of the Indian contingent told me that he went for Haj and saw Guru Nanak’s Kharavan and felt very happy that there was something from India in Mecca.

From Mecca Guru Nanak went to Madina, Jerusalem and through Eastern parts of Turkey up to Southern Russia and came back to Punjab via Oom in Persia. It was in Persia that one of his followers had prepared a gown or Chola for him which is now preserved in a Gurdwara in Punjab called ‘Chola Sahib’. This Chola has some ‘Ayats’ from Koran according to another Muslim Air Force pilot who had seen it when he was posted in Punjab.

The basic purpose of Guru Nanak’s journey to West Asia was to propagate singing the praises of God Almighty or what we call Kirtan -a word derived from Sanskrit word Keerti meaning praise. I have been informed by an American Christian lady whose ancestors worked as Missionaries in West Asia that they the Christians never used to sing in their Churches. They started doing so about 450 or 500 years ago. This clearly proves that the Christians of West Asia who were exposed to Guru Nanak’s preaching began to abide when he passed through their homeland. But the Muslims of West Asia did not pay heed because someone has gone and written in the Islamic Law that music and singing is evil.

On the contrary it has been scientifically proved through lab tests that classical music played to crops brings a better yield and cows give more milk. Even unborn babies in the womb when exposed to classical music prove to be better human beings. Inversely it implies that those people who abhor music and call it evil are obviously not better human beings. You can see the result of this abnormal idea of saying that ‘music is un-Islamic’ from what is going on in West Asia, Africa and in Pakistan as well as Afghanistan.

Where does it justify in the Koran that you can kill innocent people by bomb blasts -either by directly planting them or by suicide bombers?
Where does it justify in the Koran that you can kill innocent girl children if they are going to school and you can burn down school buildings because they are teaching scientific information for the better future of women?

I will re-quote a historical example which is already there in one article of this blog if you scroll down: The Governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, wanted two minor sons of Guru Gobind Singh to be bricked up alive for failing to condemn their father as a rebel and for refusing to accept Islam as a condition for being let off. But Nawab of Malerkotla, Sher Mohammad Khan, who was in the court, said that Koran does not justify such an extreme action against minor children. This is what earned him and his Muslim subjects of Malerkotla a blessing from our Tenth Guru and that is how they still live there whereas other Punjabi Muslims migrated to Pakistan.

I recently read a book which was revealing. The author an Arab Christian from Lebanon wrote, ‘The Arab saying goes, “They (the Muslims) are fed hatred by the Mother’s milk”.’

Being exposed to the flood of information available in the free and open media of the Western and other Democratically open societies shows how deluded the Arab and the rest of the Muslim world is in its self-absorbed and manipulative thinking. The Arab Muslim’s world, because of its religion and culture, is a natural threat to the civilized people of the world particularly those who have not read the Koran. The basic commandment of Islam is intolerance towards anything non-Muslim. Islamic teaching is filled with hate toward Jews and infidels. The Koran is at odds with all other spiritual scripters of the world. While all other major religions and even Sikhism teaches ‘love thy enemy’, ‘forgive those who trespass against you’ and ‘turn the other cheek’ Muslims are taught to hate and fight the infidels and consider them as enemies of Allah.

War and peace, fear and tranquility, bias and tolerance, close-mindedness and open-mindedness, inequality and equality are at odds. When you are unable to be grateful to the people who saved your life, you have no soul. When humans become devoid of compassion and a sense of forgiveness; open-mindedness; when they surrender their humanity to hate; they become an evil force of darkness that is irreconcilable with love and peace.

The abovementioned Arab Christian author from Lebanon also wrote, “It is in Jerusalem that you are able to see clearly the differences between Arabic and Jewish cultures as represented by the two sides of the city. It western Jerusalem you see order, structure, cleanliness and beautiful flowers planted everywhere. You can see people sitting on park benches and reading books. In the eastern Jerusalem where the Palestinians live you see uncleanliness and garbage everywhere: A man after eating a banana throws the peel on the pavement; Walking down the pavement you can catch the occasional smell of urine coming from some damp nook where two walls meet; People shove, yell at each other and hurl sexual gestures and obscene language at females walking down the alleys. In my six years of stay in Jerusalem I never ever saw an Arab man sitting with a book in his hand.”

The same author also wrote about the so called atrocities being committed upon Arabs, “I wonder if the foreign press ever knew that PLO was founded three years before Israel occupied Gaza and the West Bank, and that the PLO wanted Israel wiped off the map. But in a ninety-second story [by the foreign press], who has time to remind viewers that when the PLO was founded, Gaza was illegally occupied by Egypt, and the West Bank was occupied by Jordan. But Yasser Arafat did not mind those occupations? Where were the voices of the Palestinians then for their independent state?”

Therefore, my dear Sajid Syed you should be introspecting because lot of things are going to change in this world now that we have become a global village. It is no longer the ‘deserts of Arabia’. Changes will have to be introduced by Muslims themselves. Educated and well informed Muslims are feeling the need to do. The London Arabic language daily Al-Sharq-Al-Awsat dated 2nd December, 2001 published a letter by Dr Shr Muhammad Hatem of Riyad, Saudi Arabia calling for a thorough self-examination in the Arabic world, “Our culture of demagogy has engendered bin Laden, al Jawahiri and their ilk. The letter said, ‘The mentality of each one of us was programmed upon entering school as a child, [to believe] that [Islam] is everything. Instilled in our small heads was the [notion that the Muslim] has a right-whatever the cause- and that he will triumph-even if he is armed with a stick of wood against a tank- because he represents truth and others represent falsehood. Instilled in our heads was notion that we have monopoly on good values…. They have taught us that anyone who is not a Muslim is our enemy, and the west means enfeeblement, licentiousness and lack of values and even Jahiliya [i.e. ignorance -a term used to describe the pre-Islam era] itself. Anyone who escapes this programming in school encounters it in the mosque, or the media or other preachers lurking at every corner.”

As far as many Sikhs owning Havelis in Lucknow is concerned: Have you gone and asked them how they became owners? Who are the owners? Are they business/traders/money lenders families?

If they are traders then they could not have fought for the English because no shop keepers from Punjab or for that matter even from elsewhere in India ever joined the fighting arms of any kingdom least of all the English recruiters. The English had applied the Caste System preference for Kshatriyas and farming background men very rigidly because they found their build strong enough to face an opponent in battle. And they recruited others from Muslims and even non-Muslims on their bearing, physic and tenacity.

You must understand that a shopkeeper who keeps sitting at his money-making-station the whole day cannot go home and get a good sleep unless he has converted 100 rupees into 200 rupees by the end of the day. Whereas a farmer family would encourage one male member to branch off for military service because everyone in the joint family may not be able to thrive on the limited yield from the land after what the money lender would leave for them. Most farmers were uneducated and in debt with the money lenders during former times and even now.

Therefore if these massive Havelis in Lucknow are occupied by Sikhs from trader community then either they may have bought these mansions or they must have been allotted these properties in lieu of what the Sikhs left behind in Pakistan during partition. The resettlement formulae was very rigid: A family which came from 10 miles west of the international border was settled around 10 miles east of the border depending upon vacant properties left behind by those who went across to Pakistan. And those who came from Baluchistan or the North West Frontier Province invariably landed up beyond Delhi in UP or MP and even in Bombay.

And the second point is about the Sikhs who fought for the English in 1857, they were all Jat or Rajput or Rai Sikhs from Punjab with their roots firmly planted in their farms. They had no interest in massive Havelis in Lucknow unless there was a landed property for regular farm income. You may like to check this point and correct your impression.

Besides the points listed above you may like to take a look at a book which is available on http://www.amazon.com by an Arab woman Muslim Doctor originally from Syria now settled in California, USA. The title of the book is ‘A God Who Hates. Or you can enter ‘Wafa Sultan – A God Who Hates [2009].pdf’ in google search and open a pdf file.

Besides the above you may like to visit links mentioned below and see for yourself what the hardcore Muslims are up to right now.

Therefore dear Sajid Syed my intention is not to spread hatred but to inform the next generation about the ways and difficult times the Sikhs had to face in the past and how their valour was built up by the Guru’s blessing. Children who are born abroad do not know their mother tongue. Feedback and comments on various article on this Blog shows that they feel informed by my writing.

Link to my latest article is https://dontmistakemeforamuslim.wordpress.com/2014/10/20/waheguru-god-almighty-is-always-present-at-harmandir-sahib-also-called-darbar-sahib-or-golden-temple-2/

If you read my latest article you may understand why almost 50,000 people visit the Golden Temple every day and on holidays and special days the count has been found to go beyond 1,00,000 judging from the quantity of Langar they eat after obeisance at the Holy Site. And there are no statues inside: It is pure singing love songs in praise of God Almighty.

Before I end there is a hint I would like to drop: God Almighty does not require blood from animal-or-human-sacrifice to supposedly ‘pacify Him’. But Kali Devi does need human and animal sacrifices to be pacified. You may like to mull over this point.

      Dear Manpreet Badana,
      Thank you for your comment.
My stories also serve to inform children who are born out of India in English speaking countries.
Please pass the link to such children who sometimes don’t get to know enough because their parents and other family members -who migrated there- don’t have the time due to their 9 to 5 work schedule or lack of adequate information about our religion and culture.
Last year I happened to visit the Dharam Prachar Committee of SGPC Amritsar for some information about 1922 when SGPC was formed. They didn’t know what sparked the formation of SGPC or how basically it happened. When they asked why I needed that particular information, I informed them about my blog. They were pleasantly shocked. Unfortunately most of them don’t understand English that very well. I told them that they are probably doing Prachar in Punjabi and other Indian languages but I was trying to pass the word around in English.
I don’t know if you have seen my last article ‘Waheguru -God Almighty- is always present at Harmandir Sahib also called Darbar Sahib or Golden Temple, October 20, 2014. If you read it now you will find that a miracle took place at the Harmandir Sahib on 30th April, 1877 at about 04:30 am or 0430 hours –it’s mentioned at the end of the article.
It is written outside on the left-front entrance of Darshani Deori. When I mentioned to it these people, who sit in the Dharam Prachar Committee, were not sure of its contents. I asked them to have it translated into English and Hindi and put up three boards including one in Gurmukhi: they were noncommittal and to this day they have not done it.
If you click on ‘About Tejwant Singh’ you will go to my Page. Scroll down until you see a comment by ‘Amy Dhillon’. She had otherwise, besides the comment, sent an email to me saying that her family members in Canada don’t have enough time to inform her. Therefore there may be many more children like her who are unaware: it is left to us mortals to pass the word around.
Last year I was getting my second book edited from an American lady: the book is about a Sikh warriors which I have written as a in fictionalized story so that common Americans would hopefully get to read it and know what a glorious past our valorous ancestors had scripted. You may be aware that there have been more 800 assaults on Sikhs in America and some of them were fatal. The book is meant to educate the less informed in the same this blog is trying to do.
With the same intention I wrote my first book titled ‘The Bold Brave and Fearless’ where the main character is a Sikh soldier from Sikh Regiment. It is available on http://www.amazon.com/
This lady, who was on-line editing, had to be briefed about us and many other aspects of Indian history. One day she told me that one day she was having lunch with a gentleman of Jewish background and she mentioned about my book. According to her that gentleman said, ‘The Sikh philosophy is the ultimate faith -if one can adhere to its discipline.’
That comment is something to be very proud of.
Good luck to you and thank you once again.

I was not aware of these comics -so busy I have been with my writing and reading. In fact one day while visiting a book store here in Gurgaon I found several comics about various gods and goddesses. The bookstore has their own publishing house and I asked them for someone I could talk to. When I got across to that person on telephone I suggested that they should print books and comics about Sikh Gurus and other historical persona. The person on the other side said, ‘There was very little demand.’
Then I was forced to tell him, ‘Do you ever realize that had Guru Teg Bahadur not offered his head at the altar of justice you would not have been printing books about Hanuman and Shiva -instead you may have been printing the Koran.
He left the line but about a year later I saw a book titled ‘Sikh Gurus’ at this bookstore printed by their publishing house. Sometime a hammer is more effective than the tinkering of a gold smith as they say, ‘Ek lohar kee so sunaar kee’.

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      Dear Sukhraj Singhji,
Thank you for the question. I will reply in simple English. I have also heard the same story long-long time ago.
While writing for the general public one has to consult books on Sikhism and the life of the Gurus and other historically important figures in Sikhs history.
There is no mention of such a story in any of the books I have read. There is nothing like that on the Internet also. Sometime these people who speak at ‘Deewans’, they make up stories to catch the interest of the public. May be these stories were created in the past by Mahants who were appointed by the Gurus to preach their message.
To show how powerful Guru Gobind Singh was it’s possible that some dedicated person made up this story. I have also heard that the Asan or seat where Madho Dass used to sit and meditate was so powerful that if anyone else sat on it he was thrown away.
But there is truth in the fact that Yogis used to have great powers and their place of meditation used to be like that. Such stories are there in the Purans and other ancient scriptures of the Hindus. There again they may have been made up by whoever wrote those ancient scriptures just to show to the uneducated people who used to listen to the Pundit reading them. Therefore ‘to-create-interest’ -so that more and more people come to listen to the clever Pundit- such stories were created. More the people listening to them, more the money offered to them by the rich who called them to their residences. The same thing is happening even now when so many Babas and Swamis and self-appointed godmen and godwomen do the same what has been done many-many times in the past.
Therefore it is very difficult to blame someone or punish anyone. Best way is to avoid such people who create sensation to attract people like actors in cinemas. Story telling is an art by itself and some people are very good at it.
To improve your English my advice is that you read something in English everyday write in English every day and speak in English every day. This is how I have learnt this language which I is not my mother tongue.
Wish you good luck and Waheguru ji ka Khalsa; Waheguru ji ki Fateh

      • tejwantsingh Says:

        Dear Sukhraj Singhji,
Please don’t go by this nonsense.
You must know that there are ‘some people’ or called them ‘Agents of Indian Government’ who say these things and then try to find out who all are sympathizers of this idea of Khalistan. Then all such sympathizers are either killed or arrested.
I know one person who was an Amritdhari good person and these ‘Agents of Indian Government’ approached him to take their side. Fortunately someone warned him that if does not join them they would kill him. So he ran away. Then they showed a badly mutilated body of some Sikh youth and said he was the same person. But he came back after many years to claim his property.
Therefore there are all kinds of tricks being tried out to give a bad name to the Sikhs.

all the Sikhs gurus were born Hindus and they practiced some part of vedic(hindu)religion, worshiping formless god.

thanks to u r service for country

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      Dear Nutan Kumar,
Thank you for your comments which bring to my mind a number of issues.
I am a born Sikh and I worship the formless God Almighty who created all other Devas and Devis. I am aware that there are 33 crore or 330 million Devas and Devis or gods and goddesses because there is a mention about them in the Guru Granth Sahib where it says that even they are reciting the Name or Naam of the creator. Therefore compared to the traditional statue worshiping Hindu next door I consider myself at a higher level than the Hindus. I bypass the 330 million gods and goddesses and try to call HIM, the formless God Almighty, on my direct line. Someday HE will pick up the phone and ask “What do you want my dear son?”
I have nothing against anyone believing in the formless God Almighty or worshiping statues of a Deva and Devi or believing in Jesus or Allah. It is one’s own choice -preordained as per past Karma.
No doubt that all the Gurus of Sikhism were born into Hindu named families but they rose above that level and systematically created an improved version of what their forefathers had been worshiping. To understand this gradual change I would recommend that you may consider reading a recently published book titled, “The Sikh Gurus” by Dr. Harish Dhillon published by Hay House. In a very simple language he has brought out the gradual change and the resistance from hardcore and entrenched Brahmins who found that the Gurus were eroding their basic followers: The entrenched Brahmins have always called themselves as the Guru. Just two examples: Guru Nanak refused to wear the sacred thread and Guru Amar Das, the third Guru, abolished Sati and actually carried out widow-remarriage. Since the Brahmins refused to conduct widow-remarriage ceremony, the Guru made the couple go around him four times and solemnised their marriage. And Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru, went a step further and composed the hymns for marriage of Sikh couples which are there in the Guru Granth Sahib commonly referred to as “Lavan”. Therefore the crux of the issue is that any reform to any original belief comes out with improvement and therefore its level of quality rises higher than the original.
Compare this to technology which is improved by modification and updating and thus becomes superior then the original. That is how scientific advancements have taken place: from the steam engine to electrical engine driven trains; from propeller driven to jet-engine driven aircraft; from a simple two wheel cart to multi-wheel carriages and so on and so forth. Therefore and in the similar manner fear of the power of nature and lack of its scientific understand had brought about changes from worshipping fire, sun, moon and all those natural wonders about which man could not fathom their secrets in the deep past. Hence the original can be discarded and that has happened to many faiths through the history of humanity. Unless the Hindus change their caste-minded mentality and rigid attitude and get rid of rituals and worship of specific god or goddess for a specific and selfish needs it will happen to Hinduism too.
The Vedic Dharma which was swept away by Buddhism was a very nice way of life. When Hinduism was revived with many more restriction and full control by Brahmins the worship of idols started which was basically copied from Buddhism. And when Arya Samaj came into being the basics of Arya Dharma was adopted with reading of Vedas. Many Sikhs in Punjab who are known to me personally adopted the ways of Arya Samaj while still retaining their Kesh identity and they still went to Gurdwaras. Then an incident took place in Jalandhar city. A Keshdhari Sikh who believed in Arya Samaj ideology was shaved off in the prominent road-crossing in full public view. That is the time Sikhs realized what the ulterior motive of the Hindu was and a gap was created. And the gap kept on widening when the Punjabi Hindus who are all TRADERS declared Hindi as the mother tongue saying in Punjabi, “Sadi matter basha Hindi lekho ji”. They thus reduced Punjabi to a non-language status and it was not included as one of the languages of India when the Constitution was compiled. The Akali Party which represented the Sikhs refused to sign the Constitution. The Sikhs had to agitate for many years to get Punjabi its due status. I would like to know: what did the Bengalis Hindus declare as their mother tongue and so and so forth what did the Tamilians, Gujaratis and Marathis declare? A bunch of people who can declare that ‘their mother is not their mother’ could not a respectable group of other than selfish and self-centered. I quote an example below.
Then I have discovered another fraud that the Arya Samaj Hindus have perpetuated. I heard from some well-informed Brahmin that the trader is listed among criminals and pimps in the Atharvaveda. I asked him to show me where and in what kind of words it is written. He asked me to go get a copy of the Atharvaveda which I procured from Gita House in Old Delhi and went to him. He opened the Atharvaveda and told me that I had got hold of a Veda made by the Arya Samaj Hindus. Naturally I asked, “What is the difference?” He said, “Most of the traders are Arya Samaj Hindus so they had deleted that part which describes them in such a bad way.” Therefore Mister Nutan Kumar the Hindus themselves have corrupted their faith. What the Guru did was to preserve the originality of Indian faith.
And what happened in 1984? Perhaps you are not aware if you were not born then. Why no one has been punished for the ‘Genocide of Sikhs’ which the print media and the MPs sitting under the banner of ‘Satyamaye Jayate’ call it anti-Sikh-riots: more than 30 years have gone by. Don’t call it riots because the definition of riot is that both sides have to be equally armed. This was a one sided ‘Genocide’.
About a year ago there was a news item in ‘The Tribune’ newspaper published from Chandigarh. A RSS functionary whose surname is Tiwari had gone to visit the Golden Temple. When he came out some reporter who was keeping a tag on him asked for his honest opinion. He said, “I will believe in Guru Granth Sahib if they remove all mention of Allah and other words which are used for God in Islam and also remove all the writings of Baba Farid.” Then the same reporter asked for his opinion about Guru Ram Das Langar. Tiwari said, “They should stop using Lasan (garlic) and Onions in the food then only I will ever eat there”. Do you understand what I mean by change of attitude?
The “vegetables” word was used by the Pathans of North West Frontier Province (now in Pakistan) to refer to other Indian troops other than Sikh soldiers when they were fighting the invading British Indian Army. The Pathans are brave and ruthless and they have more respect for someone who dares to stand up to them and match sword of sword and bullet for bullet with them. To have a good fight is like having a favorite dish for them. In their homeland everyone carries a gun now and earlier they all carried swords, shurras or barshas along with a shield.
Perhaps you are not aware that all the Pathans tribes were Hindus and they were resisting the spread of Islam which had covered the western parts of present day Afghanistan. (By the way there was no country called Afghanistan before 1752) The Indian empire of Raja Prithviraj Chauhan who ruled from Delhi extended up to the eastern parts of present day Afghanistan. And the Pathans were his best fighters who helped him defeat Mohammad Ghori 16 times when he invaded India. Obviously it was very wrong on the part of Prithviraj Chauhan to let him go away with a promise to never come again: I would call it immaturity. When another Rajput King sided with Mohammad Ghori to defeat Prithviraj Chauhan because of personal enmity, we all know that the brave but pompous King of Delhi lost the battle at Travadi which lies on the GT Road north of Delhi. When the Pathans found their King was captured and blinded and taken away in chains to Ghor, they converted to Islam: Perhaps in disgust because they realised that their King was not worth fighting and dying for. Thereafter what happened to all the 35 temples at Mehrauli -where the Qutab Minar stands- is all history now and Islam found a solid ground to suppress the Hindus. Therefore “vegetables” is very appropriate.
They were Hindu Empires which extended into Central Asia during the rule of the Kushans and the Mauryas. Then came Buddhism and made the people too pious. And when Hinduism revived by slaughtering the pious Buddhist using the Rajput sword, it came back with too many negative attributes or too many restrictions. You may like to know that Hinduism had spread into South East Asia before Buddhism took over there. Therefore when Hinduism revived why didn’t it go back there? Because Hindus were not permitted to go across an ocean it remained within India only with all kinds of restrictions imposed upon the people. The Brahmins were probably more determined now and were going not going let any other faith take over. I would say that instead of going out, Hinduism imploded –an explosion which occurs inward only. Thereafter no King ever went to conquer any land beyond the “safe” borders.
Now you are saying that there was no spiritual leader to lead the Hindus. Why? What happened to the four Shankaracharyas? Were they not the spiritual leaders and custodians of Hindu Dharma? Did they play a good role in the religious and social life of the common Indians who were all Hindus until Islam came?
When the Kashmiri Pundits went and prayed to Lord Shiva to save them from forced conversion, why did he send them to Guru Teg Bahadur and not to any of the four Shankaracharyas? Because Lord Shiva knew that they were all useless. Lord Shiva knew that what the Gurus were doing was correct and was badly needed by the Indian society. I would dare to add that Lord Shiva had adopted the house of Guru Nanak as his own house because he came as his elder son named Baba Shri Chand.

the reply u have given is totally vague or for that matter half knowledge is danger. i will debate this in parts, so please give some time.

        first things first:

Sikhism is not religion but a sect:

1)the sikh founders, if they have known that its followers instead of naam jaap in old are going to argue that hindusim is not good religion and muslims are right in breaking idols and raping hindu womens then they would have first killed this kind of persons who are giving bad name to sikhism.

2)when shah shuja, the ex-rular of kabul sought maharaj ranjit singhs alliance in1831, among ranjit singhs demands were the prohibition of cow slaughter thro out afghanistan and delivery of gates of somnath. these demands are very dear to the hindus. now why would ranjit singh do so if he perceived sikhism to be a different religion.

        3) a man is tested through good times and bad times, but few man stand to be different than other because they have passed through bad times and comes out with flying colors. the same goes to jugde strength of any religion,
hindu religion has been from 5000b.c and seen many ups and down like Buddhism softness and muslims hard bad times and still survived and alive with 100cr followers all around the globe.

4)actually it is a shame to islamic mullas and rulers that even after subjugating hindus for nearly 1000yrs hindu religion and idol worship is still flourishing.

        5) till some time ago punjabis were divided into monas and sardars. using todays connotations they are hindus and sikhs. families in punjab normally dedicated the first son to the army, thus he became a sardar while the others became monas. thanks to guru gobind singh the turban came to be associated with valor, someone who cannot tolerate oppression. hence the first son wore a turban.

6)while the adi first granth is essentially a distillation of vedanta in punjabi, the dasam tenth is a compilation of tales of valor of hindu goddeses. of the 15208 names of gods that appear in adi granth, hari occurs over 8000 times, ram 2533 times followed by prabhu, gopal, govind and other hindu names for the divine. the popular sikh coinage wahe guru appear only 16 times.

i can go on, but this is part 1 for u , due to time i will give part 2 anewers in some more time.

  23. Raj Says:

By time Aurangzeb had died, Mughal empire had gone bankrupt and weak due to twenty seven years of war against Marathas.

Mughal army was soundly defeated by Hindu Assamese army under Lachit Borphukan

Aurangzeb waged two separate military operations – each one lasted thirty years – in Marwar and Bundelkhand which ended up in failure by time Aurangzeb died.

Aurangzeb’s invasion of Mewar ruled by Rana Raj Singh also ended up in fiasco.

    This was in 1680 – 1710 period.

Of these, Maratha-Mughal wars were the largest. War of Twenty Seven Years between Marathas and Mughals are the longest and bloodiest war fought on Indian sub-continent. One of the main effect it had for people of North India was that Aurangzeb himself was forced to leave North India and bulk of his army got stuck in Maharashtra.

It was Marathas who captured bulk of Mughal empire and hoisted orange flag in Delhi in 1772.

As for plundering raids of Marathas – Marathas to plunder and torment innocent people only after death of Baji Rao in 1740. Baji Rao can be compared to Ranjit Singh and what followed death of Baji Rao in Maratha realm is comparable to what happened in Sikh realm following death of Ranjit Singh. This is not to suggest that they did not plunder before 1740 – but that was done as a part of military operations and not for enrichment.

As for Panipat – Marathas recovered from the defeat in 1770 and invaded North India and conquered entire region between Sutlej and Chambal. A considerable part of present day Indian Punjab was freed from Muslim yoke. A considerable chunk of Sikh population did benefit from Maratha conquest of North India in 1772.

It was a mistake on part of Hindu Rajput leaders to have submitted to Mughals. No people anywhere in the world have flourished under alien rule. Alien rule always have corrupted a people’ character and made them weak and unworthy. But even Sikhs have done the same in the beginning and had it not been for terrible persecution by successors of Akbar, its extremely unlikely that they would have taken up arms and become a military religion.

If Rajputs of Rajasthan had ashamed India by marrying their women to Mughals, they also did repentance by warring Aurangzeb heroically and once Aurangzeb was almost close to defeat and capture in Ajmer by Rajput confederates. By 1710, Mughals were entirely cleared out of Rajasthan. I would say that persecution of Aurangzeb did one very good thing for whole of India – whether it is Punjab, Rajasthan or Maharastra……

He roused Indians from inaction, ease and compromising mentality and made them fight to the finish. Mughal empire came into being only because Akbar had bribed all independent Hindu princes into submission by his lavish distribution of jagirs, appointments to high mansabs and vast costly gifts. The moment, Aurangzeb reversed this policy and started persecution, achievement of Akbar was lost and Mughal empire was doomed. If a tolerant man had been on throne instead of Aurangzeb, Indians would have rusted and degenerated further under Mughal rule.

Sikhs began their true heroic saga only in eighteenth century after death of Aurangzeb.

Sikh freedom struggle led by Banda Bahadur was the first full blown struggle by Punjabis against 700 years of alien “Turk” rule in Punjab (even though father of Punjabi freedom struggle was Guru Hargobind Ji). Sikh resistance to invading Afghans from thirty years from 1740 to 1770 is one of the most heroic epic in Indian history.

Real greatness of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is that he converted Punjabis from goats into lions. What distinguish Sikh freedom struggle from freedom struggles (like Rana Pratap’s resistance to Mughals, Maratha resistance to Mughals under Shivaji and his successors and so on) in other parts of India is that earliest of warrior Sikhs came from a region (east Punjab) where native had neither army of their own nor did they have any martial spirit.

They were entirely defenseless and had no martial spirit. Durgadas and Shivaji did not have create military spirit or create military infrastructure for their people. They had suitable manpower and resources readily available for their struggles. In contrast, Guru Hargobind Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji had to begin from scratch. Guru Gobind Singh Ji will alway remain an inspiring figure for all – whether Indian or foreign- those who aspire to break chains of slavery and tyranny.

To conclude, I would like to express my deepest respect for heroic Sikh warriors and martyrs for resisting tyranny and alien rule. As a Hindu, I would also like to thank for the protection given to Hindus of North West India by Sikhs during dark days of Mughal rule and Afghan invasions.

      Dear Raj
I must congratulate you for doing an honest analysis of the past.
And may the Great Guru bless you with the Naam of God Almighty.

I would suggest that you may consider doing an honest analysis of Hindu Dharma and the role played by the Brahmin in keeping all the knowledge to himself.

One hint is that whatever the Rishis –who I suppose were all Brahmins- learnt through deep meditation about subjects which a common could not even imagine, they kept it to themselves or wrote it down in Sanskrit which was not allowed to be studied or read by anyone other than the Brahmins alone being the head of the caste system.

The second hint is that if what the intelligent people (Brahmins) claim that our ancestors knew about many scientific ideas which they wrote down and the Europeans stole from them and used them: then all inventions and discoveries should have been done here in India. Technological know-how as we know now has come from Europe and America whereas it should have gone from Bharat to the rest of the world.
Other then mathematical numerals from 1 (one) to 0 (zero), we have not contributed anything to scientific knowledge of the world. Even the mathematical numerals are called Arabic numerals: we have been denied our true copyright. The Arab took the mathematical numerals from India through trade and when Islam came to the Arabians and spread along the northern coast of Africa, the use of mathematical numerals also spread westward. When the Moors invaded Spain from Morocco in 710 AD that is the time the original Indian mathematical numerals were introduced to Europe. Before that the Europeans were still using the Roman counting system in which there was no zero and you could not multiply or divide on paper.

  25. SachaBanda Says:

Mr Tejwant Singh, please do not preach the history written by British stooge Macullam. When there are conflicting claims about what you say and what Persian and other historical evidences show. Below is just one example.

“The testimony of trustworthy Sikhs”. They are, therefore, often conflicting. The earliest account of the events leading to the Guru’s execution is in Siyar-ul- Mutakharm by Ghulam Husain Taba- Tabai in 1780, more than 100 years afterwards. Ghulam Husain states that “Tegh Bahadur, the eighth successor of (Guru) Nanak became a man of authority with a large number of followers. (In fact) several thousand persons used to accompany him as he moved from place to place. His contemporary Hafiz Adam, a faqir belonging to the group of Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi’s followers, had also come to have a large number of murids and followers. Both these men (Guru Tegh Bahadur and Hafiz Adam) used to move about in the Punjab, adopting a habit of coercion and extortion. Tegh Bahadur used to collect money from Hindus and Hafiz Adam from Muslims. The royal waqia navis (news reporter-cum- intelligence agent) wrote to the Emperor Alamgir… of (their) manner of activity, added that if their authority increased they could become even refractory”. However he goes on say : ” I have called this the “official account” or the official justification because for an historian, official accounts are generally full of evasion and distortion to justify official action. As it was, Hafiz Adam had died much earlier. Also these events have been placed at Lahore.????”

Thank you for the comment. Very sorry I could not reply earlier because I was down with a medical issue.

My research is based on prominent Sikh historians and writers like late Prof Harbans Singh and many other whose books I have read.
I don’t agree with what you have written because this Persian writer calls the Ninth Guru as the Eighth Guru. That is good enough for me to ignore such biased writing.

Moreover, in the Diwan-e-Am of the Mughal emperors a diary was maintained which was called Darbar-e-Akhbar-Maula (I think that is correct name). All events which took place were recorded by the court clerk even to the extent of who-said-what and who-gave-which-present to the emperor and what did he say in return -kabool or not or give such and such gift to him.

This Akhbar is available in Persian in the archives and most of it has been translated into English. And that is how we know what all happened to various Sikhs who were captured and beheaded in Delhi.

    Hello Sir,

Through curious browsing about Indian history I landed on your page. I was mind blown by the depth of your knowledge.
I certainly learnt a lot more about revered Sikh Gurus.
I have read every single of 60 comments here. While gaining a lot of knowledge however I disagree with the statement of ‘if not for Sikhs Hindus could have perished’.

I’m from Rajmandry,Andhra Pradesh. We learn about our own kings Vijyanagara kingdom, Rudrama devi etc who fought against Muslims. Even if we go back Alexander was stopped by King Porus a Hindu king who put a strong resistance and not to tell about Nanda Empire. The point I’m iterating here is ‘Hindus’ are not selfish slaves as generalized by many of your posts.
It’s true that caste-system is utterly disgraceful but there are many who oppose it within Hindus itself not only today but in olden days. Have you known about Annamaya? He was a brahmin who fought for other castes for equal rights.

The fact is Islamic invaders repeatedly conquered north-west India which depleted traditional kingdoms and lineage. The non-combatant Hindus in north west India were needing badly an inspirational and moral figure. The birth of Sikh gurus with their refined thoughts and teaching is to be glorified by one and all. And all Hindus today should take pain to learn about the great Gurus.
However terming Hindus as slave/selfish is somewhat demeaning when in other parts of India the same Hindus were actively fighting against Islamic oppression.
But what you said is also 100% true sir, we should stop praying for selfish reasons instead for a greater good. And not to talk about silly caste system anymore.

As a modern Hindu I feel Hinduism teaches many things the good and the bad; and Sikhism is one of the soul evolved to defend this land.

Thank you once again sir for great blogs.
    Jai Hind.

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      Dear Venky,
      Thank you for the comments.

There were certainly many kings who fought against Islamic raiders in the southern part of India. But my concentration is to the north because everyone entered from the northwest.

I have heard identical comments from a Pakistani Muslim and an Indian Muslim from UP. Both said, “If you Sikhs had not come along to put a stop to what Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb was doing to spread Islam, today there would not have been Pakistan. The whole of India would have been ‘The Islamic Republic of Hindustan’. (Even now the population of Muslims in UP is very close to the Hindus. Wait for another decade and you may see something more dramatic)
Buddhism did the maximum damage to the aggressive element of Indian culture -the go getting and conquering spirit- once Ashoka adopted a passive approach. Otherwise the Indian empire extended into Central Asia at times. And the rest of whatever was left was nipped in the bud by the revival of Hinduism when several fresh restrictions were imposed upon the society to make it even more rigid. That is why no one ventured out to conquer or discover other lands across Asia and across the oceans to our south. As time passed a rich society became more and more satiated by a passive lifestyle where one need not go out because we were a rich nation all along.

Discovery of landmasses beyond Asia, Europe and Africa became the right of the western Europeans whereas we should have done it. Even now if some Indian young man wants to go out for adventure what do his close associates in our society say, “Why you want to take panga? Can’t you sit at home and enjoy life?”

That is laziness and the majority is Hindus and not Sikhs. With the teachings of our Gurus and the selflessness incorporated in our philosophy wherever we have gone we have prospered.

There is much that can be learnt from the Punjabi spirit.

    • tejwantsingh Says:

      Dear Iqbal Singhji,
Sat Siri Akal and thank you very much for your comments.
Concerning the subject -existence of Ram and Krishna- there is no doubt that they are mentioned copiously in Shri Guru Granth Sahib and there was one time before the word Waheguru was coined in the Bani if the Bhats, that the emphasis was on reciting Ram only.
My point is that these two Avtars of God Almighty are fictional names meant for reciting Gods’ Name only. And the moral conducts listed out in Ramyana and Gita are ideals for us to follow. But history goes by documentary proof, physical proof of buildings, artifacts, archival objects which contain the most reliable element called Carbon which can be dated to know the age of the item. Unlike the Harappan and Moenjodaro sites and other scientific discoveries through the use of modern day technology and satellite investigative capabilities, which have yielded fairly accurate estimates of their age, there is no such item to corroborate the physical existence of the cities of Ayodhya for the Ramayan scenes and Hastinapur where the political drama of Mahabharat took place.
There are modern day books written after using scientific technology which corroborate that the Saraswati was in existence up to certain dates and the it dried up -the main reason was an earthquake which diverted the Sutlej and Yamuna which were main source of water for this mighty river. Yamuna came out of the hills about 50 kms east of where it was earlier flowing and thus came to be in its present day location east of Delhi -earlier the Yamuna used to flow south of Rohtak, Hansi, Hisar and Hanumangarh and then join Saraswati just before Suratgarh. Even scientific reasons for the drying up of Saraswati have been listed based on laboratory tests of soils and sands of Sutlej and Yamuna found in it dry bed.
Then comes the age of Harrapan sites along the foothills where Chandigarh is located. These sites have been dated after the period when the great Saraswati River dried up and the inhabitants abandoned their homes along the mighty reiver and moved closer to a source of water -springs and seasonal rivulets from the hills. Those who were closer to central India and closer to the Kutch basin moved from the banks of Saraswati towards other rivers in the central and southern parts of India. Wherever they went they named the local river as Saraswati.
Carbon dating of artifacts along the Yamuna and Ganga falls into a later period. And there is no physical proof of buildings and other artifacts and their actual availability to prove that such a city existed. No doubt the fundamentalist will make any building today and call it some name associated with Ramayana. There is no argument with such people because they don’t believe in the use of scientific technology to prove anything. Theirs is blind faith.
For example, take the case of Allah who requires blood of animals to be offered once a year for appeasement. For that matter go back to Abraham the Jew (that is where the story of Jews, Christian and Muslims start because they call him Baba Abraham as their father) who was asked by God to sacrifice something most-dear to him. And he took his son for the sacrifice. God was happy and allowed him to sacrifice an animal instead. So that became the norm until Jesus Christ asked them to put a stop to it. And they killed him. But the Jews stopped killing animals in their temples to appease God. Then came Mohamad and he started this process all over again.
But the fact is that no god demands blood of its creatures for pacification other than only one of them. And that one demi-god is Kali who is pacified by blood. Therefore, one can conclude that all this blood-letting is for Kali. So one can say that Allah is another name of Kali. Now do you see the double standards being followed blindly.
A time has come to change all this. The present day turmoil will lead to objective thinking. That is where the religion of peace and calm and sharing with others will dominate which will be the philosophy of Guru Nanak.
If you don’t agree with me we need not get into any arguments if you don’t want to.

I have study guru granth but it’s always conflict in guru granth.,when same guru granth say one god it also say many gods and some guroo condemn hindu other praising hindu gods., guru granth is a book of poetry not the book of god.,

      • tejwantsingh Says:

        Dear Javed,
        Thank you for the comment.

To some extent you are right that Guru Granth Sahib is a ‘book of poetry’. But, Guru Granth Sahib is a ‘book of devotional poetry’. And the emphasis is on singing the praises of God Almighty and that is how one meets God. Therefore, Guru Granth Sahib is a Granth of peaceful-dedication which beside praising God also advices devotees on various aspects which are essential for preparing yourself to reach closer to Godly qualities.

Your impression is also correct that Guru Granth Sahib accepts the concept of many gods yet emphasizing the need to accept God as a single entity. That is because Guru Granth Sahib states in many passages that the 33 crore (330 million) gods and goddesses or Deva and Devi were created by the Almighty Himself. And it informs devotees that these minor creations are constantly seeking the blessing of their creator. Therefore, worship the All-knowing, Omnipresent and Formless God Almighty only and none else.

Your impression that Guru Granth Sahib criticizes Hindus is correct because problems in the society have been created by the caste system which was created by the Brahmin and exploited to the disadvantage of the common people. That is why the Sikhs follow different ways compared to what the Hindus do.
Guru Granth Sahib criticizes the concept of Brahmacharya and the concept of abandoning one’s home and family to go to the forest to find god. It also does not approve various other ways which the Hindus follow.

The crux of the philosophy of Guru Granth Sahib is to sit and sing the praises of God Almighty and the rest will follow.
Guru Granth Sahib also states in the passages written by the Fourth Guru that one has to live a proper life and do Sewa which is of three kinds: Tunn, Munn and Dhann.

The first is Tunn ke Sewa that means physical or bodily effort towards a Kar Sewa at any site or location which does not profit you directly but is for the benefit of the public.

The second is Munn ke Sewa that means reading the Devotional passages of Guru Granth Sahib as well as Singing the passages accompanied by musical instruments in the company of others irrespective of their status in the caste system or in the society -rich or poor.

The third is Dhann ke Sewa which means contributing one tenth of your income towards any spiritual activity or Kar Sewa from where one does not profit directly but is for the benefit of the public.

One passage confirms by saying, ‘Khavo Kharcho ral mil Bhai; Tot na avayee vadhdo jai. It means share and consume; it will not decrease but will keep increasing.

Unfortunately, singing is prohibited in Islam. That is why Guru Nanak Dev ji went to Mecca via Baghdad accompanied by his companion Mardana (a born Muslim who played the Rabab) preaching that singing the praises of God Almighty is the only correct path to attain God. Wherever he stopped people heard him though initially they wanted to stone him, but then they accepted him as a man of god.

His wooden slippers or Khadanwan are preserved in a niche near the Kabah. This has been confirmed to me by an Indian Air Force Muslim officer of Wing Commander Rank who went to Iraq in 1980 to train their pilots. From there he went for Haj and saw Guru ji’s Khadanwan with a caption ‘Peer Baba Nanak’. He told me this in 1983 when he visited my office in Delhi Cantt for some other work. And he said that he felt very proud that Mecca had something from India.

Another interesting information which came to me from a Christian lady in American -whose ancestors were missionaries in West Asia- is that the Christians started singing in Churches about 500 years ago. Even the Jews began then. It is coincidental that about 500 years ago Guru Nanak Dev ji went to Mecca and from there he went to Madina, Jerusalem and further through Syria to the southern limits of Russia -preaching to people to sing the praises of God Almighty. Therefore, the Christian and Jews listened to him and started singing the praises of whoever they worship but unfortunately the Muslims did not pay heed.

Guru Nanak Dev ji returned to India via Oom in Iran where one of his devotees had made a Chola for him which is now preserved in a Gurdwara known as ‘Chola Sahib’ situated near the Indo-Pak border. It has embroidered Ayats from Koran on its exterior.

For understanding how God is present in Guru Granth Sahib, may I invite you to read my latest post titled, ‘Marvel of Naam Simran: How Does Reciting Name of Waheguru -God Almighty- Work in our Mind and Body’.

And for further details please read one of my previous posts titled, ‘Waheguru -God Almighty- is always present at Harmandir Sahib also called Darbar Sahib or Golden Temple dated October, 20, 2014.

      Dear Nirmal Singh ji,

I sorry for the delayed reply.

Rivers of Punjab have been shifting their course due to tectonic activity of the earth crush which is made of large blocks or plates. When they shift earthquakes take place.

For example, the Sutlej River had already shifted 100 times by the time Rig Veda was written more than 3000 years ago. That is why Sutlej is also called Satadree or in Sanskrit it is called Shatadru -in the Rig Veda- which means 100 channels. These channels are visible in Satellite images.
The same has been happening with other rivers also which means that Ravi River had also shifted away from the fort or closer to Lahore throughout history. If you study present day Satellite maps you can see the old beds of all the rivers of Punjab.

Therefore, Ravi must have been flowing much closer to Lahore fort during the time of Guru Sahib than it is now. So the popular belief that he took Jal Samadhi in Ravi River and then did Akash Gawan is a more acceptable and a popular fact with believers of Sikhism. He did not do it in a Nala.
The Nala you are talking about is actually a Mote or a Khayee around the fort which used to be filled with water and sometimes had crocodiles in it as a defence to prevent anyone crossing. This was very normal in those days when a King lived in a fort. My own maternal grandfather -Nanaji- used to live in a fort which had a Mote around it and was filled with water from Ravi River. My mother used to call it Khayee.

      Wish you good luck.

There is no exaggeration by me. But if you are biased against the Sikhs then you may say anything. I will quote a few instances of history to clear your understanding.

Nadir Shah, the King of Persia (present day Iran) invaded India in 1749 because Mughal Emperor Mohammad Shah Rangila was more ‘Rangila’ and not a very strong emperor. Nadir Shah looted Delhi and the adjoining villages after killing about 20,000 people of Delhi. How do we know this figure: an Englishman who was there from Calcutta wrote about it since he was a witness. Nadir Shah took away the Kohinoor Diamond, the Golden Peacock throne of the Mughals and so much looted wealth that he needed many carts, camels and elephants to carry it away. He also captured about 25,000 women and about 10,000 carpenters and masons because he wanted to make nice buildings in his capital.

During his journey through Punjab he had to stop many times. At night, the handful of Sikhs who were themselves fighting for their own survival used to attack Nadir Shah’s camps and loot the wealth and take away the women. By the time he crossed Indus River, those 25,000 women were all saved. Then the Sikhs took them back to their homes in and around Delhi and back to their families at great personal risk. Those women who were rejected by their families as ‘impure’, were adjusted within the Sikh fold to save them from slavery and exploitation. This is as per the official records of Nadir Shah’s secretary and the records in the then Mughal Durbar.

On the other hand, you talk about Shivaji Maharaj. I don’t think he needs a ‘Maharaj’ word added to his name. Let me inform you that for the Marathas all property and women outside Marathwada was meant to be exploited and seduced. Ask the people of those regions which are outside the Maratha lands what they say about the behaviour of Maratha soldiers of Shivaji. In the villages around Ahmadabad in Gujarat people -Hindus and Muslims- killed their women when the Maratha army attacked to save them from dishonour. Therefore, followers of Shivaji had a good excuse to follow him because he allowed them to seduce other people’s women even if they were Hindus. The Sikhs did not do this kind animal behaviour. The secretary of Ahmad Shah Abdali, Noor Mohammad, wrote about the Character of the Sikhs and shamed his own Pathan people for their wild behaviour.

And what the Jat Regiment soldiers did during the 1984 attack on various Gurdwaras in Punjab -if I tell you- you might feel ashamed if you have any good sense.

I became a permanent resident of Hisar district after 1947. After we had settled for a few years and worked hard to cultivate the lands, the local Jats used to say, ‘Sardarji, ever since you people have come, we have learnt good manners and how to dress properly and eat properly’.

Gurbani teaches lot of things if you care to read. You may like to read this book, ‘The Legend of Banda Bahadur’ by Harish Dhillon. It’s available on http://www.amazon.com/

what you mentioned the things above about Shivaji Maharaj’s army may be wrong or right but as far as SHIVAJI MAHARAJ is concerned He’s well known to respect women….even Shaista Khan to save himself acted as woman because he knew that SHIVAJI MAHARAJ never harmed any Woman…….When it comes to Bravery, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the first name which strikes the mind And even Rani Lakshmi Bai… The Marathas has their own history where the Bravest has marched thing is just that we havent got the deserved recognition that everyone else has….. Some black incidences have been in every religion’s era …. Marathas have been known for their Respecting and Fearless nature,If to count the the names SAMBHAJI MAHARAJ, PESHWA BAJIRAO…..and countless that it will exceed anything

        Dear Akash Saste,
Thank you for your comments. I know one does not want to hear anything adverse about a ‘popular leader’ one admires. But a leader of Shivaji’s stature ought to have punished his followers if anyone indulged in inhuman behaviour with the general public even if territories outside Maratha lands were captured. By the way, several thousand Bengalis were butchered by the Marathas.

Moreover, my blog is about Guru Gobind Singh as the most extraordinary warrior Saint in history. He was a Survedani who sacrificed everything he had for a righteous cause and for the rights of non-Muslims to follow their faiths as they wished. As is written in my blog, he at the age of 9, advised his father Guru Teg Bahadur to offer himself for sacrifice if the world was heavily laden with calamity when the Brahmins of Kashmir came to him at Anandpur Sahib after being directed by no less than Lord Shiva himself.

And in subsequent battles he was forced to fight on the cold and rainy night of 5th December, 1705 after vacating his fort on assurance of safe passage by the Commander of the Mughal army and the Rajput ruler of Himachal Pradesh. The Muslims had sworn on the Koran and the Hindus had sworn on the holy cow that they would not attack him: but they betrayed the trust and attacked him.

His family was scattered and his followers were mercilessly killed on a rainy night. His two elders attained martyrdom fighting the last battle of their life.

His mother and two minor sons who were entrusted to Pundit Ganga Ram Kaul -his cook- for safe passage were betrayed by him to the Mughal Governor of Sirhind. The minor boys aged 6 and 9 were bricked up alive when they refused to speak against their father and did not accept Islam as allurement for being let off. By the way, Pundit Ganga Ram Kaul was the ancestor of Indira Gandhi.

When Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan of Malerkotla pointed out that Islam does permit minors being treated like that and he walked out from the Darbar, it was Sucha Nand, the Brahmin finance minister who pressed Governor Wazir Khan that the boys should not be spared as they were sons of a snake.

And when Guru Gobind Singh heard about Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan’s protest he declared for eternity that the Muslims of Malerkotla will always be our friends. By the way, none of the Muslims from Malerkotla migrated to Pakistan and even those from outside rushed into this town for safety remain safe to this day.
Now where do you draw the line?????

Dear Akash Saste ji, there cannot be comparison of Guru Gobind Singh with any political leader who fought for his throne or territory like Shivaji or Rana Pratap or for that matter anyone else.

Long time ago the RSS had printed a calendar with side by side portraits of Guru Gobind Singh, Shivaji and Rana Pratap. The Sikhs objected and cautioned the RSS not to insult the Guru and compare him with people who fought the Mughals for their throne.

Recently on the occasion of 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh celebrated at Patna Sahib- his birthplace- one Swami Chidanand ji said, ‘Hindustan is alive and functioning only due to Shri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib. Hindustan should remember the supreme sacrifices of his four sons. And the message of Gurbani should be preached.’ This is there on Facebook.

Dear Akash Saste ji look at another double standard of the Hindus. Ever since Independence the Sikhs have been given only one holiday on the occasion of Guru Nanak Dev ji’s birthday whereas Christians have two holidays -Christmas and Good Friday. Why not declare the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh as a Gazetted holiday like all others applicable to the whole of India?

WILL YOU DEMAND IT ON MY BEHALF.
WHY DON’T YOU START AN ON-LINE PETITION TO THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA TO DECLARE IT AS A GAZETTED HOLIDAY?????

Sir, you have falsely accused hindus for not giving any holiday to sikhs. It is purely showing ur hate towards them. Though I do not know its reason. May be u are unable to digest the rise of hindus as maratha, jat etc. But let me clear you its not hindus but secular and appeasement policy holder govt is doing so.

        Dear Som,

Thank you very much for the comment. I am glad the internet gives me a chance to interact with people like you.

Firstly, I don’t hate the Hindus. But I pity to those who are restricted to the worship of some god or goddess for their personal needs. I consider myself very lucky -maybe due to my Karma of previous lives- that I get an opportunity to interact with my Great Guru and try and connect with God Almighty. I also try to live as per the guidelines stipulated by Guru Granth Sahib during the daily reading of its simple words.

I know one Punditji in Delhi who always meets me very nicely. He asked the first time we met if I read Guru Granth Sahib and when I said yes, he said, ‘You are very lucky because everyone gets a chance to do so.’ Kismatwale ko milta hai.

Unfortunately- maybe due to my luck- I have come across too many people with double standards belonging to not only Hindu faith but even Sikhs, Muslims and Christians. At the same time, all is not lost. I come across people from all faiths who I find seem to be God-Evolved. Therefore, dear Som, let me assure you that I don’t hate you. In fact, someone wrote to me a few months back that many people have tried to provoke me by writing bad comments and accusing me of about false and imaginary things and I don’t seem to have fallen to their attempt.

Now that you have taken the trouble to write to me, may I request you to visit http://www.change.org and start a petition asking for a Gazetted Holiday on the birthday of Guru Gobind Singhji. Dear Harpal Singh ji,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa; Waheguru ji ke Fateh.

This is further to my short reply on 4th April, 2017 and your reminder dated 12th May. Sorry for the delay.

I have been trying to draft various replies to your very-very difficult question but did not find anything that appealed me. And the last one month has been very chaotic for me: Dealing with personal issues and other unforeseen events and incidents.

Looking at the issue dispassionately, I believe that Khalsa Raj cannot be something like black and white: It’s not possible that suddenly one day you wake up and find that all the evil and all the corruption and all the mismanagement has vanished and everyone is singing the praises of a pure administration. This is unnatural. There is nothing black and white in nature as a swath of one only. That swath of pure-white is only in our mind when the Holy Light shines and that also happens when one is spiritually very high. In day to day life, there is a balance of white and black. Generally speaking, white should be about 60% and to counter that, black should be around 40%. Just like night is followed by a bright day, nature is constantly changing. Even through Gurbani, Guru Maharaj emphasize the point that nothing is permanent. Everything changes with passage of time. Even your own loved ones are not there permanently.

But right now the black is almost 90% with the white struggle to be visible. Therefore, Khalsa Raj as a blanket of purity will not be possible but patches of ‘Purity’ can certainly exist for short periods. I call it short period because everything decays after some time and has to be rejuvenated.

I find that Khalsa Raj has already happened in the past in Phases in the Punjab region.

The First Phase of Khalsa Raj took place when Baba Banda Singh Bahadur arrived in Punjab from Nanded in 1708. Within a short time, Sikh forces, under his leadership put to death many tyrant rulers, including Nazab Wazir Khan of Sirhind who was responsible for putting to death the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh in a most inhumane manner: bricking them up alive in a wall. Cruel rulers and their associates were singled out systematically, picked up and punished for their crimes against humanity.

Even in war, Banda Singh Bahadur had instructed his men not to harm or damage any religious places including Mosques, Madrassas, temples and/or Makbras (Graves). Irrespective of their religion, old men, women and children were protected from any harm. He protected the poor and low and did not harm those who had done deeds but surrendered to me seeking forgiveness. Even the grave of Sheikh Ahmed Sirhind -the main conspirator for the death of Guru Arjan Dev ji, the Fifth Guru- was not destroyed. All attempts were made to avoid giving any religious colour to these wars. As and when an area was conquered Banda Singh appointed one of his trusted lieutenants to govern it, who in turn appointed other local people to run the day to day administration.

Banda Singh captured large part of Punjab and established Sikh rule. He did not mint coins in his name as was the norm for rulers in those day, but instead minted them in the name of Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Gobind Singh. For the first time in 700 years, Banda Singh broke the belief of Mughals that they could not be conquered by any one. A clear example is the army of Afghan fighters who did not want to fight Banda Singh and accepted his leadership.

He established a democratic rule which was unheard of in those times. The poor and down trodden began to live with dignity within the areas conquered by him. He took away agricultural lands from the rich -who were absentee landlords- and transferred the land records to the names of those who tilled it. Thus, those who were tenants until then, became owners of agricultural lands and they continue to remain owners even now. This unique reform was done by the Communist in Russia under Lenin almost 200 years later. When I mentioned about this fact to some Marxist from Punjab and chided them for idolizing foreigners and ignoring Desi Heroes, they were embarrassed and mumbled that Communist don’t believe in God and said that Banda Singh believed in God. Then I told them on their face, ‘That is the reason why Communism failed.’ Therefore, Banda Singh Bahadur, who had the power of a Soldier but the heart of Saints was a true Sant-Sipahi and harbinger of Khalsa Raj.

The unfortunate part of Banda Singh Bahadurs’ time were the businessmen -the Banias of the Agarwal or Khari/Arora communities- who had commercial dealings with him as well as with Mughal tyrants. They were his main informers and helped him to capture tyrants. And they were the same people who brought about his downfall: For some profit they informed the Mughals about his week areas and strengths. Basically, for commerce to flourish, a peaceful environment is needed which was not the case then because the countryside was in turmoil. And by having him removed from the scene their business flourished.

Perhaps, this is the reason why the Rishis of ancient India have listed people of commerce in the fourth Veda -the Atharvaveda- among thieves, pimps and murderers. They have NO MORALITY. To save their businesses the Bania community can do anything. And anything can be the worst of the of moral turpitude. A live example was when Lahore was surrounded by Afghan raider Ahmad Shah Abdali before the 3rd Battle of Panipat. He agreed to spare the city from loot if each Hindu household gave one brass vessel for him to smelt cannons: Two famous Zamzama cannons were made one of which is there in the Lahore museum even now. And his order was that those Hindu households who cannot spare a brass vessel are to send their women. The Bania Community accepted this disgrace without a protest, or reaction.

The Second Phase of Khalsa Raj came when Zakaria Khan became the Governor of Lahore in 1726. He launched a policy of aggressive persecution against the Sikhs. Assessing the situation, the Sikhs organized themselves under the able leadership of Sardar Kapoor Singh and Jathedar Darbara Singh. Sardar Kapoor Singh headed a band of Sikh warriors who were forced to seek shelter in the lakhi jungles (‘The forest of a hundred thousand trees’) of Central Punjab. From there the Sikhs Jathas adopted guerilla warfare tactics and launched a series of surprise attacks on government treasuries and caravans.

Due to the success of these raids, the governor was obliged to make terms with them. Zakarya Khan decided to befriend the Sikhs and rule in cooperation with them. Accordingly, in 1733 the Delhi rulers withdrew all orders against the Khalsa and their torture and killings were stopped. They were permitted to own houses and lands, and to move about freely without any state violence against them. To cooperate with the Khalsa Panth, and win the goodwill of the people, the Central Government sent an offer of an Estate and Nawab-ship through a famous Sikh of Lahore, Sardar Subeg Singh. After some mutual discussion and to give peace a chance, the offer was accepted and this honor was bestowed upon Kapoor Singh.

As a mark of respect, before putting it on, Kapoor Singh placed the robe of honour (‘Siropa’) sent by the Mughals at the feet of five revered Sikhs –(1)Baba Deep Singh (Shaheedan Misl), (2) Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia (Ramgarhia Misl), (3) Bhai Hari Singh Dhillon (Bhangi Misl), (4) Bhai Karam Singh and (5) Bhai Buddh Singh (great-great-grandfather of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, whose son, Naudh Singh founded the Sukerchakia Misl). Thus he came to be known as Nawab Kapoor Singh.

During this truce, Nawab Kapoor Singh guided the Sikhs in strengthening themselves and preaching Gurmat to the masses. As a strategy for the future, regular communication links were developed among Sikhs to unite them. They were encouraged to freely visit the Gurdwaras and meet their relatives in the villages. Sikhs, thus, were able to create strong ties among themselves and within the general population as well.

Nawab Kapoor Singh consolidated the disintegrated fabric of the Sikh Jathas (groups) and merged them into a single central fighting force called The Dal Khalsa. He divided it into two sections -The Budha Dal, the army of the veterans, and the Taruna Dal, the army of the young. Budha Dal was responsible to manage the Gurdwaras and do Gurmat preaching. They were to also keep track of the movements of government forces to plan their strategies. And they were also a reserve fighting force for the Taruna Dal which provided the main fighting force.

For self-rule by the Khalsa, Nawab Kapoor Singh undertook several measures to secure a firm footing among the people and to prepare them for self-rule in the Punjab. To establish internal rules of discipline and
mutual understanding, it was jointly decided that:
      1. All money obtained from anywhere by any Jatha would be deposited in the Common Khalsa Fund. All provisions for different Jathas regarding their arms, horses, clothes, etc. would be met out of that fund.
      2. The Khalsa would have their common Langar for both the Dals.
      3. Every Sikh would respect the orders of his Jathedar. Anyone going anywhere would take permission from him and report back to him on return.

The Preaching effort by Budha Dal helped many to connect with their Sikhi roots and many young Sikhs joined the Dal Khalsa. The membership of the Taruna Dal quickly increased to more than 12000. To ensure efficient control, Nawab Kapoor Singh split it into five divisions, each with separate centers. These five divisions were stationed at five Sarovars around Amritsar, namely Ramsar, Bibeksar, Lachmansar, Kaulsar and Santokhsar. The divisions later became known as Misls or Confederation of likeminded warriors and their number increased to eleven. Each Misl took over and ruled different region of the Punjab replacing the Mughal rulers.

The most significant part of this self-rule -Khalsa Raj- is that a minority of few thousand took over rather than a vast majority Muslim population who were estimated to be at least 33% of the total population of Punjab. The rule of the Mughals in Punjab being a Muslim-rule should have been replaced, ideally speaking, by the local Punjabi Muslims only. But that did not happen because the Governors of Punjab -ever since Muslim rule started- were always ‘OUTSIDEERS’: Turks, Pathans, Iranians or Hindustani Muslims appointed by the rulers sitting in Delhi. Perhaps, the local Punjabi Muslims had accepted it as fait-accompli that someone will come and take over without their having a say and that no one seem to care for them anyway and they would have to accept whichever ‘Outsider’ comes. In such a scenario, coming of the Punjabi speaking Khalsa Rulers were a great relief for the masses as a homegrown force who spoke the same language and understood the same culture.

Nawab Kapoor Singh, being the leader of the Khalsa, was assigned another responsibility by Mata Sundar Kaur, wife of Guru Gobind Singh who resided in Delhi. She sent him an emissary along with Jassa Singh Ahluwalia who was then a young boy. Her instructions were that Jassa Singh was like a son to her and the Nawab should raise him as an ideal Sikh. Thus, Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, under the guidance of Kapoor Singh, was given a good education in Gurbani and thorough training in managing Sikh affairs. Later, he became the founding Jathedar of the Ahluwalia Misl and played an important role in leading the Sikhs to self-rule.

The Third Phase of Khalsa Raj came into being as a result of invasion of India by the King of Persia, Nadir Shah in 1739. By then the relationship between the Mughals and the Sikhs had already deteriorated and Zakarya Khan launched a policy of extermination. During this phase, there was no clear cut boundary for the Khalsa to rule but their horses were their homes and the jungle was their abode. The Khalsa roamed the countryside but was hunted mercilessly.

In the meanwhile, Nadir Shah reached Delhi and terrorized its ruler Mohammad Shah Rangila. He massacred more than 100 000 people in Delhi and carried away most of the gold and valuables. Before returning to his country he added to his caravan hundreds of elephants and horses, along with at least 25,000 young women who were rounded up from the city and the surrounding villages. When Nawab Kapoor Singh came to know of this, he warned Nadir Shah that if not the local rulers, then the Sikhs would protect the innocent women of Muslims and Hindus alike from being taken away and sold off as slaves.

The returning caravan was closely watched by the Sikh informants. Nadir Shah kept his caravan of loot close to the hills and he had to camp several times before the left the country. Every night a band of riding Sikhs attacked his caravan and began to free the women and loot his plunder. By the time, Nadir Shah crossed River Chenab, the Sikhs had freed all the women, and recovered part of the treasure. Then in a daredevil act, the Sikhs safely escorted these women back to their homes in Delhi and the surrounding villages though they were themselves fighting for their survival. The Sikhs continued to harass him and lighten him of his loot until he left Punjab.

Nadir Shah was surprised at this dare-devil act of the Sikh raiders. He asked Zakaria Khan about these men with beards and turbans against whom he could not protect himself although he had crushed the army of the Mughals. He was told, “They are all bands of poor fakirs, who visit their Guru’s tank (at Amritsar) twice a year and after bathing in it disappear.” Nadir Shah asked, “Where do they live.” Zakaria Khan said, “Their houses are their saddles. They can last long periods without food and rest. They are known to sleep on horseback. We have put a prize on their heads, but their number keeps growing. They are never despondent, but are always singing the songs of their Pirs. A drop of nectar from their Guru transmutes a coward into a lion -so wonderful is its effect.”

Then Nadir Shah prophesized, “The Sikhs will soon be the rulers of their land.”

The Fourth Phase of Khalsa Raj began in 1783 by which time individual Sikhs who could dare to ride out, had already taken over control of small-small pockets of their homeland and began to establish small forts even though made of mud. The population welcomed them because they provided a clean rule and fought for the protection of the people against thugs and the corrupt Mughals officials.

Once such small-small kingdoms cropped up, there was tussle between them but over a period of time they formed larger bands which became the Misls or Confederations of likeminded warriors. Eleven Misals took control North of the Sutlej and the twelfth Misl controlled South of the river.

Then the Dal Khalsa under the command of Jassa Singh Alhuwalia conquered Delhi with an army of 30,000 Sikh horsemen. The Sikh Flag -Nishan Sahib- was hoisted on the Lal Kila, the Red Fort. Jassa Singh Alhuwalia was accompanied by Baba Baghel Singh and Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia. For one month Five Singhs sat on the throne of Delhi in the Diwan-e-Aam and conducted the affairs of the city. Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II was told to stay put in the Diwan-e-Khas -his private residence- and not to interfere in the affairs of the State while his escort provided by the Maratha Chief Mahadaji Sindhia of Gwalior was asked to stay away. And the Maratha Chief was also told that the Sikhs were not interested in ruling for long from such a wretched city where innumerable sins had been committed against the Sikhs. During this one month period, the historical sites connected with the visits and the martyrdom of Guru Sahibaan were identified and suitable Gurudwaras made, though not on the grand scale as they exist now.

The Fifth Phase of Khalsa Raj began with the rise of Ranjit Singh of Sukerchakia Misl.

His birth name was Buddh Singh. At the age of 17 he was going along with his father Mahan Singh to fight their bitter rival and neighbor Chatha Chief, Pir Muhammad. On the way, Mahan Singh fell ill and asked his son Buddh Singh to lead the army. During the battle, Buddh Singh daringly stood on his horse and climbed from the rear of Chatha Chief’s elephant. Before Pir Muhammad realized the threat from his back, and tried to turn around, Buddh Singh’s sword was already on its way. The head of the Chatha Chief went flying high for his soldiers to see. They stopped fighting and the battle was won by the Sikhs. When his father Mahan Singh heard about the victory, he changed the name of his victorious son to Ranjit Singh -literally meaning ‘Victor in Battle’.

Then Ranjit Singh went about winning over other Misls by diplomacy, marriage alliances and if nothing else worked resorted to battle. He thus merged all the Eleven Misls North of River Sutlej. Seeing his daring efforts, the citizens of Lahore invited him to take over the city which was unheard of until then because Lahore was always plundered. If the citizens wanted peace they were made to pay a heavy sum in gold coins. That was the first time that the people of Lahore were treated with dignity. He was 21 years old when crowed Maharaja of the Punjab.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh came to be known as Sher-e-Punjab and it is not for any minor reason: His rule over Punjab was hailed as the most Democratic rule even for the standard of rule of other Princely States of the rest of India. All Europeans who visited and met him, declared him as the most daring and intelligent ruler in India of that times. Other rulers were declared as not even a shade of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s caliber.

During Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Raj, he called it the Raj Khalsa and no one was ever executed for any crime. One can write volumes about him but his rule really put the European adventurers on their guard. Such was his incisive intelligent that, even though he did not speak English or any other European languages, he could outwit them during his meetings.

Though we are divided, the Pakistani Punjabis to this day say that there have been only Two True Rulers of the Punjab -one was King Porus and the second was Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Others were good for nothing. Except for his personal life, Maharaja Ranjit Singh was an embodiment of Khalsa Raj.

Future. It’s very difficult to say anything definite about the future. But one thing is certain: A change will come for the good only when utter confusion and demoralization takes place. One can see wars going on all over the world in one form or the other. Perhaps, as a result of these wars, where mostly fanatic Muslims are trying to impose their version of Islam, a great change would come initiated by Moderate Muslims.

I happened to come across a book by a Pakistani Muslim named Haroon Khalid titled ‘Walking with Nanak’. The book was published in Delhi after editing by some Indians. It is heartening to note that the historical Gurdwaras associated with primarily Guru Nanak Dev ji have been refurbished by Pakistani Government after another author named Iqbal Qaiser brought out a book about them, highlighting that they were their common heritage which had immense potential for Religious Tourism by expat Sikhs. It would bring the much-needed money to the Muslims living around these shrines. This is exactly what happened. Reading this book carefully I judged that moderate Muslims who believe so lovingly in our First Guru, may bring about some badly needed changes.

This reminds me about one Sikh Saint I happened to meet by chance in the 1960s while on a visit to one of my relatives in Chandigarh. There was no formal discourse by him but he was visiting the family since he knew them from earlier times. He repeatedly said that very bad times are going to start for the whole India in the coming decades. The social levels will drop and criminals would sit in the Parliament. To get over this phase and save yourself -recite Naam.

Then he mentioned that there would be much blood in the Parikarma of Harmandir Sahib with much killings. We were all shocked and asked that how could such a thing happen because this kind of happening were common during the Mughal rule. He said that a situation would go out of hand and it would happen. Therefore, remain calm and recite the Naam.

Then the Saint said that by the end of this century the Muslims shall rise and there would be much bombings and killings. A big war would take place west of India and many would be driven from their homes. Then he said a new leader shall emerge in India who would bring about major changes first in our country and then other leaders would copy us. Then the Khalsa Raj would start.

The reason for the discrimination is that there is a frightening concern among the powerful about a real ‘Khalsa’ sitting on the seat of power in Delhi. They have also twisted the wordings of Guru Gobind Singh ji to create a sense of fear in the minds of people thus justifying systematic and planned discrimination of the Sikhs even at the hands of Hindus: Remember they were saying during the well planned 1984 genocide, ‘You have three days to finish the Sikhs of Delhi’.

Nevertheless, such discrimination should also make the true Khalsa stronger and help us clean our house despite the fact that there may be several bad elements among Sikh politicians. This is a passing phase as much as it was a passing phase during persecution by Mughal rulers and even Afghan raider Ahmad Shah Abdali with very little support from the Hindus. One must not forget that the business community of the Punjabis had not adopted the Khalsa faith except for a very small group. These monied people were busy hobnobbing with the tormentors and arranging supplies for armies of invaders. The farmers and other lower castes were the only ones who did all the fighting.

Therefore, all the Jathebandis, Taksaals, Sampradas and Dereys about who you are very rightly concerned, are also a passing phase. We Sikhs are meant to live an exemplary life and others will follow us when the times will come. This is not merely a statement by me. I have seen Hindus actually take up reading Gurbani after I explained some passage which they were keen to know. Yes, there were a few others who were actually prodding me to do this and they were quick to go and inform someone who was monitoring my calls and discussions and trying to label me.

Therefore, the time will come when there will be a wave and those whom you least expect will become Khalsa. There will not be enough ‘Amritdhari Singhs’ to initiate them with the proper Pahul process. But there may be lot of destruction or war due to other reasons. And the reasons may be due to climatic changes and economic backlashes. The basic cause for the civil war in Syria was climatic changes forcing thousands of farmers to migrate to the cities. And the clamp down on visas by the developed countries can have ramifications in India.

And then the true Khalsa or leader will emerge. The crux of the issue is to accept the fact, that a clean person has to lead: which is not visible right now except a few leaders who are showing signs of comparative purity in appearance and by their hard work. I would not like to mention any names because it’s too early unless a dramatic change takes place.

If we go to Punjab, there are a number of technocrats who are being called ‘Baba’ but they lack a political mandate to sit in the legislature from where they can influence State Policies.

      I hope this satisfies you?

I think Sikhism stopped Islamisation of India and also rejuvenated Indian culture by removing orthodox rituals from our great Indian culture.

Thank you for the comment Mani Singh ji. I am sorry for the delayed reply.

Yes, indeed the Sikhs, as devoted followers of their Guru, held fast to their belief -‘nischai kar apani jeet karon’, and overcame very-very difficult and trying times to succeed and block all Islamic invasions from the North-West which no other Hindu ruler could do. Even the Marathas went up to the Indus only to lose their self-respect and their women to Ahmad Shah Abdali in the 3rd Battle of Panipat.

In fact, the Marathas had got used to marauding all territories outside Marathwada as free booty. No woman or plunderable property was safe from them. When they were marching towards Ahmadabad, Muslim as well as Hindu villagers around that city had killed their young as well as old women to save them from Marathas shame.

And when the Marathas decided to take on Abdali at Panipat, they had even brought their families along in a massive caravan telling them that they will defeat the Afghan invader and then take them to the Himalayan shrines for Tirath Yatra. And they lost the battle so badly that bodies were piled up high and it was difficult to know who lay underneath. And the Afghan took several of their women as prize of war. Several of them were saved by the marauding gangs of horse riding Sikhs in well planned night raids on the Afghan camp.
Body of the Peshwa, an over-confident Brahmin, who was leading the army was never found. According a Brahmin Air Force officer who was my colleague, the Peshwa, who was riding a horse with an expensive necklace around his neck, is believed to have run away from the battlefield and lived the rest of his life somewhere hiding his true ignoble identity. And they came to stop the spread of Islam.

About a year ago I read a book titled ‘Punjab: From Aurangzeb to Mountbatten’ by Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of the so called ‘Mahatma’.

Rajmohan had been to Lahore doing research on this subject and mentions that when the control of Mughal Empire collapsed in Punjab, the Punjabi Muslims who were a vast majority compared to the Punjabi Hindus, should have taken over and formed their own government -but they didn’t. They had lived for centuries been under the notion that the Delhi Darbar will send some Turk or Persian or Pathan or even a Hindustani (from east of Delhi) to be the governor to bring about order.

Rajmohan writes that it was the Sikhs, though a small group of horse-riding-sword -wielding-daring-warriors, who took the initiative and brought about order with threats of severe punishment if any corrupt Mughal Administrators dared to interfere in their noble deed. In fact, I would say that they brought about ‘Khalsa Raj’ which became the Sikh Empire to the envy of the English who held the rest of the bumbling Indian rulers -whom they had outwitted- in deep contempt as a bunch of useless feudal rulers.

Thank you and wishing you well.

Mr. Author, I firstly thank you for putting together such a great History in one article for non-sikh readers like me who keep great interest in Sikhism but don’t get to read particularly anything. Thanks indeed. I’ve certain points to put before your arguments. Let me tell you that I respect Guru Nanak and rest of all the 9 Gurus of Sikhism given the kind of struggle and sacrifices they made for not just Sikhs but all mankind. Everyone in India should be thankful to them for that.
Let’s get back to History again.
You mentioned many a times that it was the strong opposition created by Guru Gobing Singh Ji and his followers that destroyed the Mughal Empire, particularly the death of Aurangazeb in 1707. But you have totally ignored the struggle of Marathas, that most of the historians formidably argue, had created the greatest opposition to the Mughals. Aurangazeb died in 1707 near Ahmednagar which was under Maratha Territory and before that Marathas caught with Aurangazeb for 27 years and got the better of him.
I’m really disappointed the way you ignored Marathas in the article. I know it wasn’t only for Marathas that the tyrant Mughal rule ceased but Marathas were a big reason for that too.
Again, in 1761 when Marathas faught the battle of Panipat against the Afghan Ruler Ahmed Shah Abdali and lost at it, it was the Sikhism movement that benefited the most of it. That’s because as you mentioned, ‘the six monthly visits of Afghan Rulers’ were permanently stopped by the great military power that Marathas rose as. Marathas became the uptimate rulers of Delhi afterwards and Mughals remained nominal under the mighty Marathas.

Respected Madam, thank you for taking time to send your comment. I am sorry for the delayed reply.

My blog is about the Sikhs with the basic aim to familiarize non-Indian readers, particularly in America, since we are a very small community and often get misunderstood and victimized. There have been more than 800 assaults on turbaned Sikhs, and many have been fatal. I do face uncomfortable situations whenever I go to meet my daughter in the US.

My intention was not to ignore the Marathas. As you say, they were a big force against the Mughals, that was so because they were in large numbers.
On the contrary, the Sikhs in Punjab came from both Hindu and Muslim background and whosoever felt that righteousness was missing in the rule, spoke up and even took up arms to remove the corrupt ruler. Therefore, our numbers increased bit by bit.

About a year ago I read a book titled ‘Punjab: From Aurangzeb to Mountbatten’ by Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of the ‘Mahatma’. In fact, I would say that they brought about ‘Khalsa Raj’ which became the Sikh Empire to the envy of the English who held the rest of the bumbling Indian rulers -whom they had outwitted- in deep contempt as a bunch of useless feudal rulers.

Rajmohan is critical of the Phulkian rulers of Patiala, Nabha, Jind and Faridkot because they signed a treaty with the English seeking protection from Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In fact. Ranjit Singh’s mother was the Princess of Nabha. So, they were all cousins. Yet Politics is Politics. The Phulkian rulers, of whom Captain Amarinder Singh is the most prominent now, decided to remain neutral even when the Sikhs were fighting the English in the First and Second Anglo-Sikh wars of 1846 and 1849 after the demise of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Therefore, a vacuum in Politics is always exploited by those who dare to do so. The Sikhs dared do so and they won and gave a clean administration to the Punjabis. Under Sikh rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, no one was executed. The Muslims loved his rule. Even now the Pakistanis often say, “We have had just two rulers who were worth their salt. The first one was Porus who took on Alexander and the second one was Maharaja Ranjit Singh for whom the willy English had great respect.

Yes, the Marathas went up to the Indus only to lose their self-respect and their women to Ahmad Shah Abdali in the 3rd Battle of Panipat. They lost the battle due to their over confidence and certain ignoble deeds they had performed during their rise and spread all over India.

The Marathas got used to marauding all territories outside Marathwada as free booty. No woman or plunderable property was safe from them. When they were marching towards Ahmadabad, Muslim as well as Hindu villagers around that city had killed their young as well as old women to save them from Marathas shame. When they marched into Bengal, lakhs of them were massacred.

And when the Marathas decided to take on Abdali at Panipat, they had even brought their families along in a massive caravan telling them that they will defeat the Afghan invader and then take them to the Himalayan shrines for Tirath Yatra. Such was their over confidence. One should never under-estimate the enemy. And they lost the battle so badly that bodies were piled up high and it was difficult to know who lay underneath. And the Afghans took several of their women as prize of war. Many of those women were saved by the marauding gangs of horse-riding Sikhs in well planned night raids on the Afghan camp when they passed through Punjab.

The Sikhs did the same when Nadir Shah, the King of Persia plundered and massacred Delhi in 1739. He killed about 20,000 innocent residents in a matter of 6 hours according to an English businessman who saw it and reported to Calcutta and wrote back home also. Nadir Shah plundered Delhi and the surrounding areas and enslaved about 25,000 women according to his own court records. During his night camps while passing through Punjab, my ancestors -since I originally belong to Amritsar region- saved all those 25,000 women and restored them to their homes. Because the Sikhs performed noble deeds -as ordained by the Great Guru- we, though in small numbers, became rulers.

The body of the Peshwa, an over-confident Brahmin, who was leading the army was never found. According to a Brahmin Air Force officer who was my colleague and his ancestors were in the service of the Maratha court, the Peshwa, who was riding a horse with an expensive necklace around his neck, was believed to have run away from the battlefield and lived the rest of his life somewhere hiding his true ignoble identity.

Thank you and wishing you well.
